Do nothing - after all, that's close to what many of the cheap tuning boxes seem to offer.

Whilst that's true of ones for petrol engines Addo, it's very easy to increase the power output of modern diesels. Cheap boxes fool the ECU into increasing the fuel pressure which gives a longer injection phase. More expensive ones, including re-maps of the ECu actually work a different injection programme, and substantial gains can be had - +30 BHP on the 110 HDi is easily dooable. If Adrian Flux will insure it for the same or less, then I may have to invest...

Ive got a Tuning box on my HDi 110 Xantia..

And I would NOT be without it now either!! The difference is great, the box I have is one that plugs inbetween the cars injectors harness, so each plug goes to the box first, then the injector....

It also does NOT seem to affect fuel consumption, I still get around my 45mpg avereage... bear in mind I do a lot of dual carrage cruising at 75 mph roughly...

Its a box made by PSI Motorsport.. similar to these:

As the owner of Paul's tuning box for several years and many thousand miles, I can say I saw no detrimental effects and consistently had good MPG.

I now have the 2.2 twin turbo HDI 173 and feel no need to increase the oomph!

The present owner of the car that used to have the tuning box is also on here and will probably pop his head up and say how the engine compares to other 2.0 HDI 110's owned by the family.
Currently driving a 2004 C5 VTR (old shape) and an Electric Kia Soul. Sorry but the electric one is my favourite!
Formerly Hyundai Genesis 3.8 V6, 2 x Kia Optima, 2 x C5, Xsara and Saxo.

Quite a sad fact but that means I have driven both Pauls Xantia and my C5 with the same tunig box fitted

I can't really remember driving the C5 with it and it was my first drive of a C5 so I was unfamiliar with them. One thing I did notice was the engine seemed a bit rattly, actually it concerned me, though when I bought said car with the tuning box removed it was how I expected it to be and has remained that way.

The C5 I bought from ben, the 2.0HDi 110 SX, has a very good engine, its lively, good on fuel and the car has been fantastic with it needing very very little repairs the past two and a half years.

I was impressed with the performance of pauls Xantia witht the tuning box fitted, not quite as quick as my 2.0 HDi 16v 138 C5, which we drove back to back, but lively all the same and a huge difference compared to another 2.0HDi Exclusive Xant I have driven.

I toyed with the idea of getting my previous 110 C5 remapped, as I like the idea of that more than a tuning box. The remap works with the ECU whereas a lot of tuning boxes seem to con the car into overfueling. This seems dependant on the quality of the box as some offer a good performance gain with little impact on MPG - sometimes it improves. My experience of remapping tells me economy is nearly always improved when driving the car normally, its often smoother too and as it has to be worked less to gain the same speed its a better drive. Performance also generally improves greatly but not always so much with a tuning box. Though this also depends on if the remap is a generic one (which doesnt suit every car, even if they are the same) or a custom remap, which are the ones to have.

I recently drove another 2.0HDi 110 C5 with a tuning box, and while it didn't seem to have quite the increase in power as Pauls HDi does it did smooth the engine out (tried it off and on) and also provided a usefull amount of extra pull too, but not a great amount.

Im surprised your insurance is less with a tuning box ... im with Adrian Flux, I might look into it for my current C5, though its fairly lively anyway with 138bhp. If I was to tune it I would remap it, which should give it somewhere in the region of 170bhp, similar to the higher powered 2.2 HDi Twin Turbo.

I can't comment on what make either tuning box is though ...

I'm reluctant to fit one, although I believe there is extra performance and better fuel consumption to be had.

My concern is that the fuel pressure is increased so as to force fuel in quicker. I understand that the achilles heel of Hdi's revolves around fuel pumps and general fuel handling. Hence, tamper at your peril?

What do others think?

The increase depends TOTAL on what type of box you get!!

The box I have does NOT touch fuel pressure what so ever, it plugs in between the injectors and injector harness plugs, so it actually adjusts the injector Opening Times and does nothing to the Fuel Pressures.

Chris, I found there to be an intermittent connection on one of the plugs, which was giving me intermittent Power increase, then "Normal" power... Ive got the plugin properly now and shes quite rapid.. no idea what actual BHP she has..

Incidentally, my car is on 183k... and Ive just chucked in a bottle of Redex Injector Cleaner, and have noticed a cleaner exhaust...
