The Series 2 also lost the 3.5mm input on the stereo that the Series 1 had.

Slightly later MK2s had Trafficmaster. Very early ones didn't (benefit!)

All Mk2s had rain sensitive wipers.

All Mk2s loose some character over the MK1. Personal opinion only.

No trafficmaster here Jim on S reg.

Plaster cast off now and replaced with a big boot thing. Light spannering duties resumed with some assistance and of course the crutches.

Even managed to lie under Landrover for an hour today to change a diff gasket. I can get down on ground and back up on crutches by myself.........yippeee!
Will get gearbox oil out tomorrow on Mk 11.

Trafficmaster was fitted to S2 models at some point during 1998, the problem with V6's and Activa's is a lot of them sat around unsold for long periods prior to being registered.

In addition to what has been previously mentioned;

S2 has twice as many radio remote buttons on the steering wheel giving much greater control over the ICE.

Side airbags fitted to S2 from mid 98 onwards.

S2 has greater side impact protection fitted and change of door card design including deep bins and centre console bin giving much needed greater interior storage space.

S1 code pad removed and changed on S2 to RF immobiliser.

S2 front seats have different/more comfortable design but lose the adjustable side boulster.

S2 heated rear window switch moved to the end of right stalk.

S2 rear screen washer much better as it is moved onto the roof which unlike S1 on the wiper arm isn't constantly blocked :D

S2 lower front profile/bumper the same design as other Xantia models, on S1 the lower bumper protrudes like Jimmy Hill's chin

Diagnostic socket changed from S1 30 rectangular to S2 16 pin EOBD style, S2 has greater diagnostic capability such as recording the cause of last 15 triggers of car alarm, CPH/body computer fitted.

S1 infra red remote changed to RF remote central locking.

Rear light lenses changed from 'smoke' to white.

V6 wheel design changed for smoother appearance.

S2 V6 has winter pack fitted as standard i.e. heated front seats and screen washer nozzels plus headlight wash.

From mid 98 onwards sunroof fitted as standard to V6 models.

S2 headlight design gives much greater light output.

I'll take the S2 over a S1, too many improvements to ignore plus a sleeker front end design :D

Much as the S1 I do like, but I have to agree, the S2 much a MASSIVE improvment on the S1, Headlights included!

Totally agree with you Richard...

My Mk1 V6 does not have adjustable bolsters, I think these were Activa-only. Personally, I find the Mk1 seats more comfortable.

If you compare the optics on a late MK1 and a MK2, they are identical, just squeezed into a different shaped case.

also:...

The Mk1 V6 has slightly stiffer front suspension, using the front electrovalve & hydroactive dampers from an XM.

The Mk 2 lost the door cards with extra stitched "piping" (what is the Mk1 door card cloth called?)

The Mk2 leather steering wheel is not as comfortable as a Mk1 leather steering wheel.

I think the "Blow Up" side bolsters were a Full Leather fitment ONLY, and not fitted to the Half leather suede seats. My P reg Mk.1 V6 has the blowups..

Excellent guys. My mk1 has winter pack anyway. Also half leather which is much superior in all weathers to the now all so common black full leather.

This mk 2 goes nicely and has different feel to mk 1.......I had just put that down to sphere condition.

S2 glovebox is much larger with two cup rests (not holders) and a pen clip  on the underside of the lid, S1 glovebox is sized as per the name! I can't stand papers being placed behind the grab bar due to the reflections it causes on the windscreen

Adjustable side bolsters were certainly fitted to S1 VSX models (I had them in a TD + 2.0 16v VSX) and are shown as standard fitment in the S1 V6 brochure, have you checked for it or have the seats (or more likely the switch's) in your car been changed Mike?

You've confused me there Mike, the lens is totally different shape and S2 lenses don't have the legally debatable kick-up on the O/S giving a 'U' shape beam rather than the normal triangular beam pattern, I recall one member on here had his S1 fail the MOT for that  but whatever the debate about lens optics I've found the light output to be much better on S2 models and have never needed to carry out the relay modification on one.
xantia_v6 wrote:The Mk2 leather steering wheel is not as comfortable as a Mk1 leather steering wheel.
Interestingly Jim measured the size of S1 and S2 rims and found them to be the same size :? but then the measurement on the S2 was taken from my 55k S2 so maybe he was comparing a higher mileage S1 with it. I can't say I notice much difference between the wheels on my present car's (both low mileage) with the S1 maybe having a slightly thicker rim so maybe its simply variation in manufacturing.

Oh I nearly forgot, the horn switch position changed from the indicator stalk on S1 to the drivers airbag on S2.

Any more before I go outside and compare S1 and S2?

I forgot to ask about this one Mike, what difference can the Hydractive valve make? Unless I'm mistaken they're either open or shut :?

If memory serves, the MK1 leather is slightly chunkier than the MK2 leather, and the MK2 rubber is slightly chunkier than the MK1 rubber (I'm still on the look out for a decent MK2 rubber)

ooh :) not sure if this thread is generic S1 and 2 differences or pertaining to just the V6..

if all xantis then
All Mk2s had rain sensitive wipers.
Jim, not the LX? no auto setting on the stalk and no sensor

seat change, side airbags added to the S2 after maybe a year or so? also the leather changed slightly at the same time I think

steering wheel buttons do still change from Radio to CD (well they do with my sony unit, so apologies, this may be a unit specific issue and not the buttons?)

I may have misread the thread a bit though :O

John

edit

sorry Dickie G just read this

The thing that bothers me most about the MK2, and this is only because I drive MK1s far more than the MK2 is the placement of the horn and radio controls. I can never find them

I also miss the oil temperature gauge on the MK2 and don't honestly see the benefit of the gear position repeater in its place in the instrument pod. There's a perfectly good illuminated quadrant down by the gear selector lever so why have the repeater?

Suspension-wise, I can detect little or no difference between the marks.

Seats again, equally good. I do like the headlight washers on the MK2 and in the winter I miss them on the MK1. MK2 lights are definitely better.

I like my MK1 but I suspect that's more because of what I've done to it. I have a deeper personal relationship with it than I do my MK2.

On balance, in cold light of day, the MK2 has to take the prize but I still prefer the styling of the MK1.
