306 power steering hose.

Post by myglaren »

Anyone have any idea of the cost of a 306 D-Turbo power steering return hose.
My son's has just developed a leak and he is going to France in it on Friday.
Mechanic suggests sleeving it as a new hose is likely to be prohibitively expensive. We can't find the price until the morning and he will have to rearrange his ferry booking tomorrow if he has to take my car instead.

There are two hoses, high pressure and low pressure. As you call it the return pipe that would make it the low pressure one?? which is just normal hyd` pipe supplied by the meter.Something tells me it may be the high pressure pipe that is leaking on yours?? This is a special Dealer only pipe and costs about £80.Do not cut and sleeve it unless its done by a professional hydraulics firm.

Yep, it is the return (low pressure) pipe and the bit that is breached is the metal section that acts as a cooler.

The guy has done a bit of research and found that more recent models, using the same rack and pump forego the cooling section.

We had estimated the dealer replacement pipe at around £70 so fairly close.

He got cold feet on sleeving it due to the amount of corrosion and the danger of contaminating the fluid.

He's going to bypass it with HP hose and possibly fit an OEM replacement later.

As long as it gets him to France at the weekend then it will be OK. The trip is already a disaster - the lad who was supposed to be going with him came off his bike in Scotland the weekend before last and did much damage to himself so can't possibly ride and may not even be able to go at all. Busted arm, ribs, hip and femur, blood clots on top of that and a bit of concussion.
They were going downhill racing, they go every year.

Unfortunately the car isn't here Malcolm. I can't get at the V5 either as my son is on nights and asleep at the moment.

Many thanks for the offer though. Will post the VIN when I have access.

Damnit!
He's just shot out to work and I didn't get the V5.
As for trying to find it in his room - needles/haystacks.

Girl across the road with a rather nice but slightly trashed* 406 coupé was having difficulty driving it when I got back, went to see her, needed to find out how much she wanted for it as it is written off, cat C.
She couldn't turn the wheel, naturally my first thought was power steering fluid.
Looked under the bonnet and lifted the serpentine belt out, snapped. Fortunately it hadn't made close acquaintance with the timing belt, just draped over the engine.

*hole in the back bumper allegedly caused by her ex reversing into it with a towbar. Front bumper and bonnet a bit mangled following a close (too close) encounter with a cyclist.

She went out fifteen years ago and hasn't returned yet, not likely to either.

Wouldn't have bothered her in the slightest though Malcolm.
