SI -> SII

Post by Stekelly »

I much prefer the look of the centre console with the SII flip down radio cover like in my SX so , having gotten the radio over from Gregg , if it's a runner I want to change it in the Activa. The only issue is the radio. Will any of the single din radios that fit in the spring loaded cover work with the contols on a SI steering wheel?

Apparently the steering wheel control signals changed three times during the Xantias life with the different radios:

S1 Blaupunkt
S2 Clarion ('98 - '99ish)
S2 Blaupunkt (I think...) with flipdown cover ('99 - '01)

Ah arse. so I'd need to change the steerign wheel. I like the feel of the leather steering wheel much more, but the buttons on the SII wheel are much nicer.

While I think of it too, am I right in thinking the steering wheel has to come off on a SI to take the cowl off from around it? I was tryign to dismantle it the other day and it seems the only way. What sort of madness is that?

Ideally you want to consult an auto radio specialist for this, I'm pretty sure that all of these radios can fit all of the cars with just different adapter cables behind the head unit.
I had a problem with a Xantia I bought that had been robbed of its original kit and left with jus a bush of wires sticking out of the dash with all their plugs cut off, advice from Moons of Gloucester and an adapter from them sorted it quite quickly. G.

Recently fitted a Kenwood stereo in my 2006 Dispatch van which was a nice and easy swap , seeing as my old Citroen radio worked great with the steering wheel controls( Xantia steering wheel) I thought I would get a price for an adaptor so I could use the controls on the steering wheel , the price was around £55 , silly money . I didn't bother getting it for that price . I know some are quite abit cheaper depending on what car you have

You won't need to change the whole steering wheel, just the controls.

Disconnect the battery, wait 20 mins or so for the air bag setup to discharge.
Take off the air bag by undoing the two torx bolts on the back.
Unplug the wire that comes out of the steering column area and into the small circuit board.
Then you just need to remove the buttons and slip the board and wiring out. Not sure how the buttons are removed as I've not attempted that bit before.

Again, that's where I would start, I can't imagine that there is any difference in the wiring from there to the dashboard but I can't guarantee that!

Its not that simple, the wiring between the steering column and the radio changed. The S1 and S2 have the same number of wires to the wheel, but on the S2, one of the wires is used for the horn.

The S2 switches and flexiPCB won't fit in an S1 wheel.

BTW, on the S1, the wheel does need to come off to remove the cowls.

Good point xantia_v6. Something else aswell, doesn't the S2 have more buttons in slightly different places too?

S2's did NOT have Blaupunkts... They went over to Phillips..

The S2 Clarions with CD Changer used the SAME steeting button controls connector as S1 cars BUT, they do not operate each other, so you Will need to fit an S1 Steering wheel to the S2, though I cannot say if this will fit Ive never tried it..

S2's with the filp down covers which have either a tape deck or single slot CD player use a different connector at the RADIO, which is unique to these radios in the Xantia range..

The bottom line is S2 steering switches DO NOT work S1 radios and vice versa..
