Kenny, The rack in the top of the first picture (the one with its ram in a bag) is typical of the rack found on an anti-sink Xantia..
The other one I cannot identify... TBH, I don't even think it's a Xantia but could be wrong if it's off a sinker...

Damit, i too was lured in under false pretenses
top one does look like an Anti sink Xant/XM rack, the bottom one ive not seen before, could be a really late one i suppose.

Hi All,
The only citroens I've had are Xantias from 2002.
I was sent these as replacements for my S2 1.9TD.
The reason I ask is my new baby has some/excessive play in the rack which Jim (Citrojim)has suggested could be play in the inner ball joint which is on the end of the track rod.See my other thread re new Xantia.lso has a juddering brake problem but i have realised it also has ABS
I think it is all connected.
Otheriwse she runs lovely.

The TOP rack (in the first pic) is defo a Xantia one, how you guys tell a sinker to an anti sinker, I dont know, to me they all look the same.
The lower one is DEFO not a Xantia one, as said the PAS ram is not there or absent, and looking closly the Pinion valve is much taller then the Xantia one, and theres more pipes then needs to be.. Also in the lower one, the feed pipe is too short, as Xantia ones pass right across the subframe to the passenger side..

Paul, can you possibly photo your rack insitu on both T and X plate HDi because i believe the TD and HDi racks are the same for Mk 2's.

Kenny, even though it's a bit of a trial it is still easier to replace the inner balljoints with the rack in-situ then it is to swap it for another one.
That's my take on it. I've replaced gaiters and pinion valves all in place and I'd hate to swap a rack complete. The only rack I've had out is when the engine had been removed and that was difficult enough
Have you confirmed it is the inner ball joints then? They're easy to check. Jack up so the wheels are clear of the ground, waggle each wheel and look for movement in the rack gaiter concertinas. If they stay still the inners are OK and it'll be the outers that are into trouble. Again, you'll see the pay visually.
Apart from the inners, there is nothing else in the rack that can cause play.
Trouble with swapping an unknown rack is that you cannot be sure if the ram and pinion valve is 100% good. It would be sickening to go to all that trouble and then find the pinion valve is leaky...

Ive got an inner track rod to change end of this week on a HDi 110..
Racks ARE the same, its only the track rods that are different, and they are screwed in at the ends of the rods and as Jim says easy to change...
After the boot is pull back a pair of good mole grips should release the inner joint.... refitting a new one, Id advise a TINY bit of thread lock to ensure it stops in place...
If I have time, Ill do a picture as I go guide ... Id far sooner do a track rod arm then swap a rack now...!
The two sizes, the TD and standard Xantias use an M14x1.5 thread and HDi 110bhp models, and likly V6 and Activas but im not 100% positive use M16x1.5 thread bar...

Kenny,
here's a few pictures of the inner balljoint and how to swap it on the N/S side. The O/S side is much the same but it's a one-piece gaiter..
Note that in these pictures the car has been removed for clarity
Removing the end cap..
Gripping the balljoint body with stout grips...
Balljoint unscrewed...
On 'tother side the gaiter needs to come off completely to expose the joint...
Getting the O/S gaiter back on can be a bit of a fiddle but still muc easier than swapping a rack complete!!!

No it hasn't Paul! To have pictures of it done on the car with the rack in-situ would be most valuablecitroenxm wrote: That saves me dooing it...
