Now, I'm all up for a fair amount of spannering/bodywork etc,when everyone else has thrown the towel in,

and I know these classics can fetch plenty pounds etc,

but..helluva lot of work to turn a profit??!

IIRC it will be worth the money as they are circa 20k+ when restored and being a split screen is rarer as its older or something?

If you have the kit to restore it and do it on the side of restoring other ones that would turn a nice profit at the end of it. Just a shame they rust like everything else here

i think you can probably buy every single nut and bolt for old VW's, like you can for the dersh (2CV ),

so you should be able to fix it up with a planishing hammer/dolly set, mig welder and a few tins of body filler

And don't forget a good early 'Splittie' is worth an absolute fortune. The cost of restoration versus it's final value will be well on the positive side.

The later 'Bay Window' version is worth peanuts in comparison and they're not exactly cheap...

The or something is the ultimate cool factor, in the Veedub bus fraternity, and I'm with Jim, next to a,pfft..bland bay window model split screens are positively sub zero

Agreed, anything can be done with the right kit and determination etc, it was just this line in the ad that made me chuckle:

"rusted in the common places "around edges etc.."

I can just imagine the chap selling a wreck of a car to some young lady with children/ priceless cargo:

"what, the holes in the floor? oh that's nothing me dear..t'is but a scratch on these old beauty's..in fact, that's your a/c right there that is"

The Police were doing mods like that on some New Age Travellers vehicles in The Thatcher Years.

Get a few mates round armed with truncheons .......get them inside and lock the door. They beat the hell out of it shouting " you lot aint stopping here".

Let the lot of em out and bingo............van is good as new

I'm quite sure the reason these things caught on with the surfer/hippie/dropout movement was because they were plentiful, cheap and generally unwanted.

I think driving something like a Sherpa/Pilot would be more faithful to the original concept.

That is well past its best and i doubt would ever be restored. The valuable stuff is original straight parts you can find on these or stuff like pre 1968 front calipers as they are obsolete...until someone starts making them of course

The problem with vans is rot in the chassis as everything else is available and just bolts on body wise....considering the chassis will be rotten and all the panelwork is battered...and also rotten, thats fit for nothing id say

The 23 window samba splittie with safari front windows are the holy grails...they pull £40K plus once resto'd

We once had to push one away from the trafford branch after the owner had been boasting about how much he had spent restoring it (it was showroom condition in black) but i guess he'd overlooked something

We let him off though as he was also restoring an early Peugeot 205 gti in red
