406 Gear Shift Linkage Rods

Hi

The small end of the long rod poped off in Northampton last saturday. The RAC man made a temporary repair to get it golng.
I have a genuine new replacement, but I cannot get the larger end ,which is connected directly to the gearbox, off the ball.

Any hints, or tips most welcome'

Ensure its not got a clip on it first. What I used to do with the smaller ones was use a 14mm open ended spanner to 'lift' them off. There is a proper tool but the spanner actually is easier to use and quicker.
