Any advice on snags when buying these, do they for instance cover 2001 C5 HDI?

I note on some of the ads it says petrols from 1999 diesels from 2004 G.

That's the million dollar question. The ads themselves say "does most that dealer tool does", my emphasis being on the "most". Some ads even specifically say it doesn't work on certain C5 models.

Many who've bought the clones report they don't work on some cars, like the C5. I've also seen someone reporting theirs works 100% on all models.

If you specifically want it to work on a 2001 HDI C5, then maybe you could ask the potential seller that if it doesn't in practice, will they honour a full refund?

It depends on the software, as long as its 45 or later it works on all models. you can download the latest software.
