Low Oil Warning

Post by Chlorate »

Getting annoyed with my low oil warning light, it keeps flashing at me even though there's plenty of oil in there. A few cycles of the ignition tends to stop it.

I've heard these are a common fault on the XUD engine.

So how do I shut it up?

New sensor I'm guessing, but is it easy to get to?

Thanks,

-Alex

Are you using semi/synthetic oil?

The sensor triggers on semi/synth, not a lot you can do.
Doubt even a new one would make a difference as I'm sure my 3 yr old Xantia used to do it.

Aah, nevermind then, thanks Xac.

I'd guess it'd have something to do with the oils having different density. But without knowing how the sensor works it's probably not a good guess :D

Hi Alex, my TD does it as soon as level gets about half way between low and high on the stick.. i only use cheepo oil in her..

I ignore it for the most part, it should switch off after 20 seconds or so..
I do occasionally check the oil level to make sure the light has not given up crying wolf

That's about where mine's sitting at the moment actually. Got a fresh bottle in the garage, will be doing a good service before I have to ship some people up to Silverstone in July.

I do get paranoid sometimes and pop the bonnet after the nth time I've ignored it that week.

Oddly enough it didn't warn me when my oil level was actually low earlier this year :?

Mine only does it if it's parked so the nose is down and leaning towards the drivers side, so the passenger side door is higher than the drivers side. It does it without fail if I park in a certain place on my drive. If I park on the flat or nose up it never cries wolf, and thats with fully synthetic oil. I cant see the oil type making a difference

Do you park somewhere that means the car leans like that?

Oddly enough, my TD started with the flashing light a couple of weeks ago, which has never happened before. Have used same Millers semi-synthetic oil for last 10 yrs.

Oil level only just below max, and will top up to max to see if it cures it - more annoying than anything, and my sharp eyed young daughter has even seen it from the back seat - "what's the flashing light for, Daddy"

Havn't had problem long enough to establish the car leaning characteristics

Mine has always done exactly the same. Originally on mineral oil, on semi-synthetic for the last 2 years - makes no difference, it's the slope what does it. I always try to park nose-up to eliminate the risk of rain water creeping under the tailgate seal.
