Radiator Fans... Again!

Post by P616VKX »

As we all probably know... I've had no end of troubles with these little blighters... So, here's the story.

With the engine running, up to about 95'c the fans don't work... There's a lot of stop light flashing with the temperature light, but nothing else. When the engine reaches about 100'c, the passenger side fan would come in, on short bursts of fast speed. The drivers side fan did nothing.

With the plug d/c under the bonnet, only the passenger side fan would come on full speed. I checked and replaced all the relays, there was still nothing. WD'40'd the connections on the relays and still the same.

I left the plug off of the thermostat for a few weeks and then the engine overheated cos' the fan had burnt out. Whipped the fans out, tested the non-working fan and it was working, so swapped them over. The now new fan has just seized up again, so I'm going to look at a new fan Rack with new fans.

Question one: What am I doing wrong? I've checked and cleaned the Bitron ECU connections...

Question Two: Apart from chopping my spanners about, is there an easier way of getting the fans out other than taking the entire front end of the car off, and then the whole air con-radiator assembly?

Question Three... Where do I now look for the problem? Relay plugs still?

1.Have you checked there is a supply to the fans when you had the relays removed?

2. I had to remove the front of the car and but did not need to disconnect the inter cooler for the turbo or A/C cooler.

Note 1.9TD engine.

Have you the wiring layout for the fans as this will assist the supply check?

I will have to say I don't know the system in the petrol variants but assume it is very similar to the diesel.
