Synergie / 806 - 1.9TD or HDI

Post by paul in normandy »

We are looking to buy a Synergie / 806 to use as a glorified van and occasional passenger carrier.
Given that I do most of my own servicing repairs etc which is likely to be the least troublesome / complicated to put right. Are all the HDI models fitted with that incredibly expensive dmf flywheel for example? We'll also be buying it from the UK, and as cheaply as possible (might have to go over the usual £500 budget though!!) as you are lucky to get a runner here at under €1500.
Any thoughts, advice, even offers of suitable vehicles welcome.

As far as I can remember, the 806/Sunergye also keep their value, and you will be stuggleing in the UK to find even a TD at 500 quid!!!

If you basically read about MANY topics on TD vs HDi they BOTH have weakness's and strengths in different ways...

I fought shy of Hdi's but eventually bought a 406 and its a brilliant car. Mine has done 194,000 and drives like new, so if you can get one with the 2.0 8valve engine I would go with that.

Been thinking of a tuning box/ remap possibly , it does go very well when it's empty , I did have a fiat doblo 1.9 jtd (105 bhp) last year with a stainless exhaust and decat , now that was quick for a van and a great drive too , it would leave my 136 bhp C5 2.2hdi for dead

yes the HDI has a DMF

on the other hand they will survive a cambelt snapping whilst the 1.9 TD would be destroyed. Also I think that the HDI is less likely to blow its head gasket
the HDI is quicker and uses less fuel

I had to replace the intercooler on my HDI and I believe it's a common failure. I'm not sure about the 1.9

at that price you should probably be buying on condition and mileage rather than the specific model

Point of order, Cassy survived a snapped cam belt at 40mph, new cam and caps and she was good as new.

You're right re condition and mileage, its likely to be a calculated risk, buying off Ebay for example - most likely to be a TD, as our friend in the village has one, and if we want to pass it on at some stage he will be happy to buy it for bits. He was quite happy to look at a french registered but RHD 806 Roland Garros at €1000 recently with a view to breaking it for spares - as he says 'english cars are very cheap compared with french ones'.
Have had experience of the HDi in the past - in a new Berlingo multispace, which went well and used much less fuel than the normally aspirated one, but it got sold after about 55,000 trouble free miles, I think it was about a year old - now we buy older ones and I do most of the maintenance as there is always another car around to use.
Main concern is that the newer they are the more complicated they are, with less and less work able to be done by the home mechanic.

RE: XUD Belt brakeage... ITS Luck Guys!

I had to see to a 405 XUD that broke its belt at 30mph, Cam shaft, 2x cam caps, and ONE Valve bent!

I have survived a belt brake before now and just needed a cam shaft and cap... but its luck to what breaks and how.

the HDI, its designed to break the ROCKER fingers ONLY, so new fingers and thats all..

Also the HDi has a Laminated gasket from factory, though most XUD's should have one now too..

Why not get a Dispatch/Expert/Scudo with the 3 seats in the front and if you need more fit some in the back , there must be plenty of cheap vans around

We have a Scudo at work that is universally despised.
