2.0l HPI

Post by cjuk81 »

Ive seen one for sale locally, its an HPI 2.0L Exclusive hatchback with 80K miles I think on it, its an 02 plate.

it comes with plenty of MOT, so its only just passed it in the last couple of months.

Should I avoid the 2.0l hpi? Ive just been doing some searches and people dont like them. they cant all be bad can they?

They are quite rare it seems. I don't know very much about them, although I do recall they did not make them (or the 406 equivalent) for very long, which might suggest something ;) , although not having had one to look at I cannot be sure.

You would expect greater economy from that type of unit although I guess the complexity might of killed it off ?

true, i guess, i remeber ford did one on the mk2 mondeo, think they called it the SCI, it was a 1.8 if i remeber rightly, but i dont think thay lasted too long either, or they built the technology into newer engines and just decided to drop the sci badge :)

i havnt seen a positive word about the 2.0 HPI engine on the net at all

The 2.0 HPi was a bit of a flop for citroen, as already said it was'nt used for very long in the C5. They dont sound like a petrol engine should, sounds more like a diesel. Engine parts are quite expensive, if I remember right one of the catalysts is over a £1000 from citroen.
Unless your getting it very cheap then i would avoid.
Dont know if Peugeot ever used it ?

ah right, certainly doesnt sound great, the car is just over £800, its a 2003 02 plate one, with about 80K miles on it.

Not sure how that is for price, and I dont know anything about the service history yet as I havnt been to see it.

If i go to a dealer and give them the reg plate, could they tell you if it has any dealer history at all?

From odd things I've read HP fuel pump failure appears to be quite common after about 60K and they arn't cheap to replace :-(

Is it being sold as a runner? If so, then providing you get a year out of it and it goes wrong you could sell the bits off it for a decent sum of money.

Being the Exclusive, it'll have a fair range of nice goodies on it, Full zone climate control, HID headlamps and washers (those a re worth a bit on the S/H market), reversing sensors, parking door mirrors, etc. It may even have leather upholstery as an extra.

yes its a runner, has nearly a years worth or mot and tax i think, not far off anyway. its not got the leather interior though, i guess that was still an option on the exclusive. it seems to have a colur screen at the top of the dash, not sure if thats sat nav or something?

might go and have a look at it in the next day or so. what feature would i look for to check that it is an exclusive say over an sx?

The leather seats were a £1500 option until Aug 2002, optional until Aug 2003 and not standard until Aug 2003.

If it's got a colour screen then it has the Navidrive system fitted, which is route finding system. It's not a wonderful system by all reports but if you've got it then use it!

Look for the headlamp washers, that's a dead giveaway. Also, it should say Exclusive on the little panel on the little panel on the B post between the front and rear doors.

The HPi is not the one I would get ...

A couple of years ago I set off on a 300 mile return trip to see a Exclusive HPi Estate with all the toys (I was attracted by the toys). On the way I thought I would tyr to find out a bit about C5s in general as I didnt know them very well back then. I spoke to two well known Citroen specialists who both warned me off the HPI, one before I even mentioned it was a HPi. I was told fuel pumps fail very often and are about £700 to replace, I was also told its not a very refined engine and to only buy a C5 HDI diesel. I did go all the way to see it thinking its a cheap car and might be ok, though common sense kicked in about its engine.

HPi looks good on paper as its more powerful and said to be better on fuel than the 1.8 and 2.0 16v. They also come with the H3+ suspension, but I would not recommend buying one. Unless you are prepared to throw it away when it breaks, as they are not worth anything so its pointless fixing it and very very few people want them.

Certainly get a 1.8 16v or a 2.0 16v but not a HPi, there are too many well prices C5s on the market to be able to justify a HPi.

I wouldn't buy it thinking you might get a year out of it, you might well get a week!

HDis are superb in the C5, though for £800 it will be a poor do so I would go for a more tidy and lower mileage 1.8 or 2.0 16v petrol for that money.

You can soon spot an Exclusive without leather, if it has an interior fabric which really looks like an ancient sofa then its an Exclusive, if its a fairly nice looking interior trim with silver accents then its an SX. Exclusive also has a leather (effect) steering wheel, CD changer, headlight washers and a few other things which don't spring to mind at the moment. I think a sunroof might have been standard too. Really the SX has most things you would need and want, they are quite nicely equipped. Leather was optional, as was the satnav.

If it has a really big screen then it has got colour satnav, though there are three sizes of central screens on the C5s. It does not use postcodes and will require updating.

thankyou for your replys people, I went to look at it this evening but it had gone for it mot.

Chris, thanks for your little story, I think a combination of things ive read on here and alos other places on the net I think ill give this one a wide birth!

its been a while since ive seen an engine slated so much for its reliability, esp as you pointed out chris on its hp fuel pump!

did they do any testing on this engine at all lol

i ll keep my eyes open for a normal engine, either petrol or derv instead

It does really tell you something if the manufacturer only had the engine in their cars for a short period, its one to avoid. Im not even sure if it was put in anything else, certainly not in other Citroens.

I think there was a similar story with the Renault LagunaII and its 2.0 IDE (DIE?) petrol engine, perhaps the two were linked ...

I quite like the 2.0 16v PSA petrol, have had 3 XMs with it and it performed well - much better in manual, its smooth and fairly good on fuel too.

HDis are superb, I picked up a 52 plate C5 SX 110 2.0HDi two and a half years ago, it had 108K miles. Its still here and drives very nicely, we have had very few problems with it, it just goes and goes. I would jump in that car now and head for the south of France without hesitation, its very reliable. Now on 132K miles.

Don't be tempted by the cheapest ones, just find the best you can. It might take a few cars before you find the right one but it will be worth it.

I really like the C5s, very good at what they do and they have a lot to offer. Ive no idea what I would replace my current one with!

Good luck with the search :)

cheers Chris,

good to hear your C5 has been good to you, did you have any problems with the suspension or has that proved to be reliable
