Hi all,
This appears to be an old topic so please bear with me as I have just bought a 2002 PEUGEOT 406 HDI EXECUTIVE, which came with only one plip and no key-code card, and am wondering if there has been a reliable non-dealer method found for obtaining a new user-programmable plip? Key cutting would seem to be no problem sourcing, just the electronic thingies. All info gratefully received.
Many thanks,
John.

A very nice person who I quizzed about buying a replacement key on ebay for a 406 has kindly sent me this advice :
I finally got my key problem sorted out. The one I bought from Ebay was no good. I spoke to my local autolocksmith (who teaches others the trade) and he assured me once a Peugeot remote board is programmed it becomes locked, and there is no currently available equipment to unlock it. You need the 4 character PIN code for the car to code the transponder and if you dont have that Peugeot charge £20 to look it up for you. The transponder operates the ignition immobiliser and has to be coded to match it. The remote central locking on mine had been coded to another car as it was a secondhand board.
The whole thing cost me £120 from the autolocksmith. The key I bought from Ebay was only useful for the Key blade and the buttons in the case will make spares for the 2 keys we have. Could have bought those for around £3.00. Hope this is useful.
Well, I for one have found the above very useful indeed!!
All the best,
John.

The auto locksmith would tell you that. It meant he could sell you one for £120.
Second hand keys CAN be recoded to another car. I was over at Mike's just last weekend when he did one, a 406 Coupé.
Also, there are other ways of obtaining the 4 digit security code without going to the stealer.
