Duff strut tops.

Post by handyman »

I have been talking to one of my contacts who supplies me with vulcanised rubber products  , no not that sort, rubber bits for motorcycles!

I was asking him if it was possible to either repair or recast the strut top units to effect a lasting repair and he was very interested in looking at a couple to see how they could be remanufactured. I have been buying rubber from him for the last thirty plus years so I know he is good at what he does.

Does anybody have some duff units lying about that we can experiment on to see if they can be remanufactured? This might be a long term solution to resolving this design weakness. I'd be interested in Xantia and XM units and would not mind a gander at a C5 unit as they seem not to have suffered these problem. I assume Citroen redesigned it to elimanate a bad design flaw, maybe it is possible to incorporate that into a remanufactured unit.

PM me if you can help.

I do not know about them, tell me more!

I did read about a Lithuanian lot who were welding bracing bars to the units so if they did collapse it did not spear the bonnet, but the whole lot sounded rather dodgy so I never followed it up. I think even you mentioned it when I saw you sometime ago.

This KINGSas company is well and truly already onto this!

For a strnage reason though, no one has taken them up on offer.

However, as an early indicator, I have fitted a Pair to my XM SED 2.1 as part of her "Light" restoration, which they ALSO include a Saftly Fail safe ring welded into the top to prevent the Strut ever comming through again if and when the rubber delaminates...

They look exceptionally good to me aswell!

So I have been trying to collect any tops for this reason, I have a couple but could do with more really.

Just to add, I could really do with a pair of S1 VSX tops to add, Im not 100% sure If I have some, I should have but im not certain. So if anyone has a pair please DO get in touch.

Cheers

Hi Paul, to save me the task of trawling through the rather long speared bonnet thread, can you give me some details about the company offering this service?

Were these strut tops you bought any good? Were they value for money?

Cannot see any problems if there is more than one player in the game. Might help to keep the prices competative.

Just like to say they look pretty good to me too, im not sure we could get a competitive price from a UK supplier really, the company that are already in production may well start making new baseplates too if there is enough demand.

There is a good thread with pictures and prices on the XM forum but its down for the moment.

I may pick up some tops at the scrapyard Paul as Xantias are still rather common over here, that way we get a good stock which i think is the main stumbling block at the moment.

From a brief internet search, the company in Lithunia are called Elastromer EU and are based in Kuanas.

Looks like the Xantia strut top price is E50, plus VAT plus shipping there and return shipping.

Yep, which is why i dont think its worth rebuilding the Xant ones really, if genuine ones are only £120 then the £75 euro for a rebuilt one seems a bit close to me, its well worth it for XM ones though in my opinion as the new price for them is well over double that of the xant ones, and xant ones are much bigger too which is weird.
