Can I fit a BX steering wheel on an AX?

Unread post by broona »

I've been looking at this wheel -

for my MK 1 AX GT. Does anyone know if it will fit straight on, or if I need to make any modifications to make it fit?
I've seen it fitted to the rally AX on AXOC, but just need to know if it will fit a standard one.
Cheers, broona. [:)]

Ive been told that the AX GT wheel fits the BX, so i would assume that the reverse is true. One of the 16v lot have bought one of these and are highly impressed with it, does like nice dont it [:)]

And it does look a lot nicer than the one I've got now (this one isn't my car, but the same wheel)-

I think it looks like it belongs on a bus! [}:)]

Hi Broona (and Vanny!)
Don't forget you've offered me the boss if it doesn't fit lol! Not that I'm trailing you round the web or anything ;)
Vanny's right, I'm well impressed with my Momo Corse wheel :)
The standard BX item is a 4 spoke effort made of plastic, so a nice bit of leather is much nicer to hold - rain or shine!
I've got a pic of the BX boss if you want it - have you got a pic of the back of an AX wheel? On the BX you'll find an indicator cancelling cam on the LHS of the wheel at 9 o'clock when sitting in the car. I imagine the AX is the same if the indicators are on the left, and only depth could be different.
JUST HAD A BRAIN WAVE!! Had a look in the Cituning catalogue and it lists M3005 for an AX dating from 87-91 and M6822 for 91 on (so I guess a later facelift model?). The BX item is listed as M3004. The difference may only be depth but it'd be worth a careful look, or a call to Cituning to check www.cituning.ltd.uk Boss is listed at £35
Cheers

Don't worry mate, I haven't forgotten! [:D] Still waiting for it to turn up, I'll e-mail you pictures of the back when it does, and we'll go on from there. [;)]

Boss is going spare now mate (no chance of it fitting my car without some serious Dremel work on the dash!), tried contacting you via e-mail and got no response, please get in touch and let me know what you want to do. :)

Hellooo people!
I cant seem to work out what fitted & what didnt, I've just ordered a Mountney Corsa D steering wheel too, Its for a 89/90 AX GT, but the boss kit i have coming is for the MK2 AX 91 onwards, is there gonna be no chance the kit will fit?
Cheers

Hiya
I don't know if there's any significant difference between early and late AX's. I do know Cituning list bosses for both with different part numbers. I believe AS do sell them too as I think that's where Broona got his in the end.
The reason the boss Broona had wouldn't fit is because it's for a BX, and it was too wide to fit through the hole in the steering column shroud. Apparently the correct one narrows considerably to fit through the hole - maybe this is where the difference between AX's is?
It may well be just the overall length is different - my 'Momo' boss that I ordered from Halfrauds turned out to be a Raid and stuck the wheel in my chest, pretty much. The OE Momo boss I've now acquired (cheers Broona, funds are on their way!) is much shorter and actually takes the wheel slightly further away than the standard item.
Haven't fitted it yet as moving house in a week and too busy packing boxes [:)]

If anyone is interested, the only difference between the Boss for the MK1 AX & the MK2 AX is that bit that stiks out to cancel the indicators, if you fit a Mk2 boss to a Mk1 it will NOT cancel the indicators automatically.
so ner ner
I got the Raid boss too, it does stick out quit a bit but i like the look a feel of it, kind of rally stlyeee!!
