Take a Landrover 109. 70bhp. Noisy thirsty whiney but good fun with double de -clutching thrown in. Drive around for about a week.
Then park and take out the V6............Wheeeeeeeee!!!
Makes you realise how good they are and why you keep one

Ah, I was wondering what 109 had a V6 engine - and why you would want to take it out?
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Yonks ago a quite popular transplant into series landy was the essex v6 (ford) . It wasn't bad.
Series Landys are amazing............so bad to drive yet you actually get used to them.........then try to convince people how good they are.
Mad fun or what?

He was bombing along a country lane in his Capri, saw a humpback bridge, saw the road dissapearing off straight beyond and floored it to see if he could jump.
Got to the top of the bridge and flew, just in time to see the road made a sharp right hand turn, and the road he'd spotted in the distance was actually the other side of the field he had just planted his Capri into.
Took the engine out and put it in an ex military airdrop landy. Apparently it would do 150mph in a straight line, if you were brave/foolhardy enough to do it.

I had a County 90 V8 once. Ordered it new with some choice items from the options list.
This was due to my father having a County 90 TD, the LR TD, not the Rover TD. I was quite impressed hence I bought a V8 version.
Lord almighty it was thirsty, especially with me at the wheel, quite effective though and good fun.
Then I discovered the Mercedes G Wagon, different league, makes the Landy feel like junk ! The G is even better off road but is comfortable and fairly quiet. I had the 280GE, auto, would you believe ! The auto box was actually an advantage off road, and that 2.8 injected straight 6 twin cam is a peach !
Now, if I could find a diesel G Wagon in decent nick at a fair price, now ......................... !!

Mate got 150mph out of his 2.8i stretched and lowered Capri, was lovely.Kowalski wrote:It'd be doing pretty well if it managed 150 mph considering that the Capri was could only do 130 mph with the same engine...Xac wrote:Took the engine out and put it in an ex military airdrop landy. He either had an optimistic speedo or rather more power than the 160 bhp that the car came with as standard and probably longer gearing too.Xac wrote:Mate got 150mph out of his 2.8i stretched and lowered Capri, was lovely.Kowalski wrote:It'd be doing pretty well if it managed 150 mph considering that the Capri was could only do 130 mph with the same engine...Xac wrote:Took the engine out and put it in an ex military airdrop landy. If you look at the maximum speeds various cars are capable of you'll realise that you need at least 200 bhp to reach 150 mph in a car that is fairly aerodynamic. The Peugeot 406 coupe with the later 210 bhp 3.0 V6 can do 149 mph and the 407 coupe can do 151 mph with similar horsepower. There are plenty of examples of 200 bhp plus cars that can't do 150 mph, the Ford Escort RS Cosworth as an example had 220 bhp and could only do 145 mph. The Renault Clio V6 had a top speed of 146 mph, that had a 230 bhp 3.0 V6 and wasn't a big car!

Yet a 90bhp diesel estate can manage 115mph but only 105mph with a HDi gearbox, and my 100bhp could do 120mph, while my 2.1TD struggled to get to 90mph
It's not all about power.

G Wagons are some truck. 4mm thick chassis and proper built , Landys are just old kit cars really. Rough and ready .........but fun.
Early Landy V8 are pretty slow with only about 90bhp from the twin SU 3.5 The very last incarnation of that engine is the 4.6.
I drove one the other day with 260bhp. Range Rover Vogue. With 4hp22 auto it is a lovely drive. The air suspension is Citroen comfy. They can be money pits of course.
You get less road speed for your HP from any older Series or Defender with the drag of that body and the axles. 74bhp on a Series only gives 68mph road speed.

I'd agree that its not all about power, but there is a minumum amount of power a car needs to reach a certain speed.Xac wrote:Yet a 90bhp diesel estate can manage 115mph but only 105mph with a HDi gearbox, and my 100bhp could do 120mph, while my 2.1TD struggled to get to 90mph

If you get the gearing too tall or too short you're either not going to get up to enough revs and that would mean your engine wouldnt be producing enough power or you could be bouncing off the rev limiter before you get to your theoretical maximum speed!
Does a Land Rover have enough gearing for 150mph?
