Towing weight question

Post by naffa »

Hi guys its a '98 Synergie petrol and I've had a towbar fitted to pull a 875kg caravan. I'm assuming this is ok for the car?
What is the maximum towing weight for my Synergie?

I've done a search but cant seem to find anything.

Thanks Nathan
Cheers Nath.

Ive had a 1998 806 and a 2001 ulysse which are basically the same cars and although mine were both diesel as far as I can remember the towing limit is 1300kg for all models. Very stable tow car with the long wheelbase and very short rear overhang.

I have been doing a bit of research on this with the ridiculous idea of getting myself a car trailer from the likes of Ifor Williams and heading of to France to bring back a cheap Citroen DS :)

I found quite a few sites that show the towing weights, braked and unbraked. Heres one from Parkers which I have put Synergie into already.

Parkers Towing Weight Calculator

Thanks

Buying a Dee is really just paying the price of admission. Check your parts prices before plonking cash down on a cheap car...

Neil

what were you thinking of towing a trailler laiden with a DS with,

as what you towing should not be more than two thirds of the weight of what your pulling it with, (just general rule of thumb),

That calculator has some results which bend my head.

For example, suggesting a C4 can tow a braked trailer of 1700kg mass...

Its just a daft thought at the minute spawned with a bit of surfing on Leboncoin. The trailer side of it looked promising, but you are quite right the pulling side of it would rule out a xantia for definite, and would require a fair motor to do it. Rather than cut off the thought stone dead there's a bit of amusement in speculating what would be the best and most economical towing vehicle.

Newer C5's have plenty of torque, and probably more than a recognised pulling vehicle such as a Land Rover Discovery at a phenomenally higher price.

What do forum members reckon is the best "pulling" vehicle without spending a fortune :)

A borrowed one.

GM Suburban is up there; the wagon body adds rear weight. Early style Jeep Cherokees are good like that as well.

A sorted 2.1td Xantia hatch or estate should do it. I used one(a hatch) to tow am iFor Williams 4wheel trailer with a fiat coupe 20vt on it for a 100mile trip and the Xantia was amazing! Self levelling helps a lot and the low grunt of it in 5th at just under legal towing speeds and braked and picked up no worse than having a 1.9td boot filled(and I mean FILLED) with 2*2 flagstones, about 14 all in!

Here is another link I found. You can match towcars against specific caravans using the caravan and towcar matching tool (you can even compare the relative merits of two towcars side by side).

It also gives some useful information on towing which I didn't know about particularly the dangers of "snaking" and techniques for remaining safe when towing.
