Keypad Immobilisor

Unread post by Jon »

Some of you may remember a couple of months ago I posted about some starting problems with my neighbour's Berlingo 1.7D with keypad immobilisor, the problem being "no glow" despite new glowplugs and relay. We found that there was no + feed to the timer relay, and as a temporary measure ran a fused feed direct from battery+.Its been OK for a few weeks, but again this weekend refuses to start.
Noticed that there seems to be a fault with the keypad, it should have red light lit when ignition is on, and when the correct code is entered the green light should replace the red. However, both lights are lit at the same time, and this corresponds with the occasions when the van won't start! Fiddled about with it and cleaned it last night, but no better. Looks like replacement is the only option.
Does anyone know:
1) Whether it can be easily bypassed (7 purple wires, 1 earth at the back of the keypad)
2) We could just plug in another keypad if we knew the code?
Any advice gratefully receieved.

I dont think you would be able to just plug in another keypad, because I think that the keypad on my zx for example is connected to the engines ecu and therefore the code will be stored within the ecu and not the keypad. But on diesels havent got a clue.

thinking about it I think on diesels the keypad is connected to the cars injection pump but not positive this right.

yes, this van is a simple normally aspirated XUD with no ECU, so the immobilisor would appear to work on the diesel pump stop solenoid.
Just found that a new keypad is £82, bargain! [V][:(]

The Independant I use said that the immobiliser 'can be easily bypassed' on my car - 1998 Xantia 1.9TD, unfortunately I don't know how. If it is bypassed remember to tell the Insurance company.
I've also experienced problems with the keypad immobiliser. Following the instructions in the handbook (to the letter) I attempted to change the code on my car after I aquired it. All I managed to do was get it into fault - both lights lit and the car was immobilised. Waited an hour for the condition to clear (book says half hour) but it didn't. Had to move the car to get the backup bx out so drove it a few yards up the drive in first gear on the battery power via the starter motor. When I'd moved the car in this way as if by magic the fault condition cleared ! Never attempted to change it since.

They are very easy to bypass - if the keypad is working! All you have to do is enter the code correctly and just pull the multiplug off the back of the keypad. It will never bother you again after that.
I was told the by a Police mechanic - they used to do it to all the 90's Peugeots they had as the keypads are a PITA when you've got different people using the cars all the time.

the code is held in the small ECU inside the pump,if you swap the keypad with a different one it will still have the same code.both lights on usually means it has lost a feed somewhere or a dodgy earth (try cleaning the earths on the engine/gearbox.it could also be the pump ECU at fault.blueboy is correct about disconecting the pad once it is unlocked it will stay unlocked due to the fact it cant communicate with the ECU but if it's losing a feed or earth it can still fail to start.never worked on a 1.7d but to bypass a 1.9d the pump ECU has to be acsessed which is fitted behind a metal plate held on by shear bolts which have to be chiseled or drilled out.i've yet to see some one do this without removing the pump.

If its a lucas pump Jon and the immobiliser electronics turn out to be knacked, I have got a lucas module you can have.
Means removing the pump though and if you go down that road you might just want to rid the thing entirely.

Cheers Guys
I'll ask the owner tonight what he wants to do with it.
Yes Dave, the pump is a Lucas, thanks for the offer. I'll get back to you when we've decided what option to take.

Thanks folks.
We disconncted the battery for 40 mins, reconnected and were able to enter the correct code in the keypad. Then pulled the multiplug off the back and its been OK thus far (fingers crossed).
