Xantia Horn Not working (Series 2 - V6)

Post by gadgetgricey »

As per my "apologies thread", looking for some help regarding the non working horn on my Xantia.

Checked the horn and its working, just not getting 12V required to make it work. The volume controls on the steering wheel work, so hoping its not the ribbon with the wheel itself. (but looking to remove the steering wheel this afternoon - battery is currently off)

Have found a thread on here regarding the horn running through a relay, but checked all of the ones under the car, and non seem to be at fault.
The blue one is in the middle of the car, and the spare hole is nearest the door.
http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... horn+relay
Includes an electrical diagram, but not giving me any help)

Image

Have run a set of wires from the horn feed back into the car, and attached a bulb so could see when it works, but no luck.

Image

There is a connection block just under the wheel that is fed by a grey wire, worried about messing with this as not sure if its for the airbags or for the horn.

Image

As always any advice would be great, specific location of the horn relay would be fantastic.

Thanks again

Dave

have you removed the air bad from the steering wheel and checked the connections in there...
Theres a bar on the back of the airbag with a spade connection to the central connection for the.horn...check that.. I find the horn works better if you press.the whole air bag in not just the section showing the hoen symbols...

Did you check the horn fuse F7 (20 A Yellow) in facia fusebox?
I don't know the relay location

That block has nothing to do with the horn.. The horn and air bags and.radio controls air in a thin flat cable that has a rubber coat on it.... Remove the air bag... Theres two t30 bolts in the back to undo and take the bag out... That plug as i had said else where is the steering wheel angle sensor plug...

You are quite right Paul. Sorry

Its amazing that looking at it from the side, and looking at it from directly underneath, made it look like something new.
And the fact that the connecting wire seems to come from the wheel itself which I had not noticed before.

Air bag will be removed first thing in the morning. Took the battery off earlier so no "charge" left in the car. Dont want the thing going pop on me.....

Cheers

OK morning update before the Grand Prix.

Its official, I hate electrics.

Steering wheel off checked connections, all seemed OK. BUT due to my ham fisted nature when trying to remove the connectors, split the ribbon cable.
Thought OK now wont be able to use the radio controls on the right hand side. (more to come on that)
Image
Traced the connections though and found the appropriate leads under the steering column...

Put everything back together again, and reconnected the battery.

With electrics on tested the horn push, and is making a circuit and the connection under the steering column.

Going to carry on the trace action this afternoon. (also forgot to mention that there is power to the fuse box) Might even consider installing a new power feed.

However now the air bag light is on/flashing. Quick shows and is seems to be that I have caused this by ripping the cable.
1) Any idea if the cable can be repaired?
2) Can I just exchange the ribbon and stereo controls off another series 2 wheel.
3) Do I need to get a new wheel?

Thanks again.

It is easily done. The S2 ribbon seems more fragile than the S1.

I think you can swap the switches and ribbon cable from any S2 wheel.

I know of 2 in breakers around Cambridge where the ribbon is not broken (because I took the wheels off).

Hi - please let me know if you manage to cure the airbag warning light by replacing the ribbon. I am having airbag warning light issues but I'm going down the new rotary connector route - waiting for a part to be sent.

If your's is cured by the ribbon then you might become my best mate as this has been baffling me and my local elec chap for ages. If by any chance you need a rotary connector I have one for sale (I bought one without checking the part number carefully).

Good luck - look forward to some good news!

Airbag warning light update. (Resolved)

My initial fears regarding the radio buttons on the right side not working, are the only faults.

I'd removed the seat to get at the relays under the dashboard. I started the car back up before putting the seat back.

Airbag warning light must have been caused by the seat airbags not being connected. After the seat was back in place, everything has returned to "normal"

Little further forward, but horn still not working.

(also found out that the hazards are not working either   )

Cheers

Thanks for update Dave - hope you get things sorted. When is your MOT due - airbag warning lights don't result in a failure but the horn will.

These cars certainly keep their owners on their toes.

Not the best, as could not figure out where the break in the wiring was.

So have just installed a new feed, so horn all working :D

Wrecked something else in the process, but that's par for the course with my skills.

Cheers
