Xantia 110HDi fuel economy

Post by Northern_Mike »

Hi all,

just wondering what sort of fuel economy other owners are seeing out of their HDis, when driven carefully. I seem to be seeing well above the manufacturers figures, calculated by filling the car up - to first click off on the pump, running it almost dry, then filling it up at the same pump to the first click. A couple of people have claimed there's no way I can be getting that sort of economy and my calculations must be wrong. Last one I did worked out at £46.15 for 421 miles, at £1.43 a litre for diesel. I work that out to be a possibly incorrect 59.4mpg....

This was mostly motorway driving, trundling along at between 60 and 75 depending on the traffic,

Cheers

Mike

Mine (estate) only does 45mpg. But then I do tend to drive on fast country roads. And I need to fix the rear brakes. Near 60mpg does seem excessive, but if that's what the numbers say.... However, 421 is no where near 'nearly dry' I would expect the gauge still to be reading above 1/2 if you were getting near 60 mpg :?

My present one averages 53+mpg now it has a new ECU with the latest software (previously I was getting 48ish) my previous one always gave me 50+mpg, range wise I never consider filling up until at I've covered at least 700 miles since the last fill-up.

I can well believe that economy. I was able to get low 50s from my old 2.1TD if driven with care.

Oh, it was still reading above half. I was just curious to see how much diesel I'd used over the weekend.

I tend to keep the revs low in it, high gear, a touch of throttle is all it needs to trundle along happily. I've had it as low as 43 but that was driving "in a spirited fashion" when I was starting work at 7am and there was nothing else on the roads..

Of course, I have the Activa to drive fast on the country roads. That gets nowhere near it's claimed 28mpg when I'm having some fun.

I used my xantia last weekend to tow my caravan, i put £35 of diesel in @ 144.9 ltr (ouch) and it did about 200 miles, 110 miles towing 90 miles solo, i calculated the car has averaged about 38 miles to gallon which i thought was nt bad ? I think the car averages about 44 to the gallon around town which is me going to work and back.

I bought a xantia hdi 90bhp in february this year as I have a new job and travel about 700miles per week at the moment. So far I've done 5000 miles and have always averaged 47+mpg and I don't really drive slow on the motorway I easily believe the xantia can get 60mpg

My Xantia 110 2.0Hdi averages 57 MPG. On one occasion I got 69 MPG this was on a 100 Ml run, which was completed in 2 hours. Filled my car at the start of the journey, but was not driving with economy in mind, and having noticed at the end of the journey that the needle on the fuel guage hadn't moved I decided to top up, out of curiosity, so the result was 69.7 MPG -average speed 50 MPH. K&N air filter fitted since getting the car with 90,000 miles, speedometer reading at present 176,000 miles. MPG seems to improve with age. On the other hand I never seem to get more than 46/48 MPG on my sons C5. 2.0 Ltr 110 BHP Hdi with a similar speedometer reading, which is also fitted with a similar air filter.

Have never done a very exacting consumption test but with near enough style calculation mine does between 48 - 55 MPG. My driving style isn't frugally disciplined, cruising speed in 70-75 MPH on dual carriageways and motorways, 60-65 on A roads and whatever is appropriate elsewhere. My weakness is the need to accelerate fairly briskly upto speed and a hatred of stopping at roundabouts and where unnecessary, like when muppets stop or slow excessively where unnecessary. This means I just HAVE to boot it past them ASAP to prevent their interference with my progress any further !!
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

I used to drive like that when I was much younger, I don't need or want to now - hence the fuel consumption, hard acceleration uses lots of fuel, just look at your readout - if you have one.

A bit off-topic but I once achieved 39mpg from my Activa. That was on a clear motorway run never exceeding 70...

They say an Activa is thirsty and they are around town but on a run they're not bad at all...

Best from the V6 has been 35...
