Insurance - again

Post by jgra1 »

all, can someone give me a reason why the group 35 coupe is cheaper to insure than a group 25 TD xantia? (coupe is 97 and xant 99)

I have put both cars through the comparison sites, and that is the unbelievable truth. ?

This all began when I went to change the insurance from coupe to xant at lunchtime.. I got told no problem, £200 nore please.. ! I only insured the coupe 3 weeks ago, something is just not right with this..

M>RE THAN indeed... !

dumfounded...

Its magic is what it is.

Try this one then.

I have the XM insured fully comp at £350
I change the car on the policy to a 216 Rover bubble with no charge or increase in premium
I sell said Rover after two weeks and phone up to change the insured car back to the xm

Are you with me so far?

"yes certainly sir thats another £90 please plus £15 admin fee" :? :?
Naturaly i ask why there is an increase in premium, "well sir thats just what the underwriters are charging"

So, in two weeks my insurance went up by nearly £100

thats what they said to me Dean.. !

changing midterm is a killer, I now realise.. and i am only 3 weeks into this policy..

so to sum up :

£340 to insure a 98 V6 coupe SE - from 4th April
and another £230 today to change to my old beaten up xantia td, with less than half the power etc etc

 I really dont get it..

How much no claims do you have? if its a good chunk i would cancel the policy and start a fresh, this year ive got 10 years no claims and will definatly cancel the policy if i change the car again, ok i lose the no claims but at 10 years now will it make a difference?

John,

They make it up as they go along. I'm sure of it.

Depending on the cancellation fee - would it be cheaper to cancel and go elsewhere? Say to Admiral and their Multicar policy.

I went with them last month and no one could come close, they were at least half everyone else.

Toby what were you paying and how much NCB?
I put my poor xantia into 2 awkward places in the last 5 years, which isnt helping things..

If I could insure both for less then 600 I would take it, but if one is 570 I dont hold much hope..

Dean only 3 years lol... I spent a fair bit if time today checking a fresh start... it still seems that I can insure the V6 cheaper then the TD.. which makes no sense..

a word of warning, fitting leather seats may yet bite me on the bum.. Privilege wont touch me with Exclusive seats and wheels as they are a mod.. and they were half decent without mods...

Could you not innocently have bought it like that, and be too simple for knowing any better?

How the heck does a comfort item worth £75 or so, make the car a greater insurance risk?

Yeah i agree, dont tell them about it, yes you should declare mods but dont shoot yourself in the foot.

A friend of my little brother has/had an Astra van, lowered, 17" alloys, blacked windows, induction kit, stainless exhaust, blacked lights, colour coded bumpers, leather interior the list goes on, none of it was notified and he hit a car infront and was then rear ended, the assessor came out to look at it and never said anything about it at all, the insurance paid up pdq too and nothing was ever said about the mods.

My point is if you modify with stuff off another spec keep quiet the insurance arent going to know if it should be on the car or not, if you are putting bodykits on and the like then i would say without a doubt you have to to cover your own back.

John, PM sent.

There are mods and then there are MODS.

Obviously some really do need to be declared, major changes to the mechanical side of things included. I have declared braided brake hoses on the Coupé although surely they have a positive safety effect and thus should decrease my premium a small amount!?

Small upgrades from the same model but higher in range, I can't see the problem. I'm sure the companies say to declare everything to scaremonger so they can then charge more. After all, most companies say that even if the mods are declared, they won't pay out to replace them in the event of an accident, they will only replace with standard parts.
