Damn and blast!

My ashtray light has blown (smoker) and I'm getting sick and tired of stray ash round the car (most driving at night)

Have attempted to gain access at bulb with the spare car I have, only succeeded in breaking the holder thingee!

Has anyone done one of these?

You could just bodge it:
Solder the connectors to the bulb itself and epoxy the bulb into what's left of the socket.
Since the old bulb is apparently good for 10+ years, I think you can justify it being a bit of a pain to replace again if you still have the car when it goes again

These come from memory,... as far as I remember,
I have only used tools, T20 and a small flat head screwdriver.
The bulb was 12V 1.2W, all glass (T5 ??).

First removed the tray part and undo 2 torx screws holding the frame around heat slider controls.
Pulled off the frame where the lighter is still attached. Beware there are 2 wires connected to rear side of the lighter.
Unplug 2 wires and you'll get the lighter which is cylindrical shape.
After this using flat head screw driver I removed the outer and and inner shells. No pics and difficult to explain.
After all this you'll get the bulb removed.
Hope this will help a bit.

or just tape a very small LED lamp to you fag flicking finger so you can see were the ash is going

I got to the stage of trying to work out how the cylinder popped out the front, the bulb holder *appears* to be clipped on to the side somehow, preventing the cylinder from coming out.

The main issue I have is how to get the holder seperated from the barrel thingee!

To make things worse, both Xantiae have done it now

Haha love it!!!

Guess that could serve other purposes too, when people pull in front of you for instance!

Might be slightly embarrasing if attempting to subtly pick ye ol' nose tho

I removed the whole ashtray + lighter but I don't remember was it because it was not possible
to remove the cylinder from front by pulling it.
I can check it tomorrow but until then try the same.

2 torx screws hold the ashtray block and the rectangular frame around the heating sliders.
Screws are located below the frame, a bit awkward access. Helps if you remove first the ashtray part.
No screws but a flat metal piece below to release it.

If I remember rightly the socket is glued in and you have to take the whole tray out to get to the glued bit of plastic. It is a PITA but can be done with patience. I replaced the bulb in mine but since then the internal connector clip broke so I replace the whole thing with an aftermarket jobbie, just needed new connectors wiring on.

Taken some pics today. First the tray part must be removed.

There were more screws than I remembered

- 2 screws (orange circle) holds the frame and must also be removed
- 4 screws (blue circle) for the ashtray "sledge"

Lighter cylinder definitely comes from this side as seen in pic. but first
pull the sledge out and disconnect the wires behind. From this point on
you'll have the lighter removal and this part part was easy.

The tricky part was to separate the two cylindrical shells for bulb change

Mine was not glued as it was in Stempy's case.

If you can not figure it out I can continue the disassembly

I've got to the stage of having the ashtray in hand, the issue is getting the bulb holder out, that was the issue that I had last time too and only succeeded in breaking the practise run one.

How does the lighter barrel and the lighter holder come out? seems to be too large to just come thru the front

IIRC you undo the torx screw in the middle of the recess and it all falls apart in your hand.

Is this screw on the lighter barrel or in the ashtray mechanism?

Sorry, I didn't read the whole thread, are you wanting to replace the bulb or the lighter assembly? Either way, the tray (not the ashtray) has to come out.

The bulb holder unclips at the back/side where the connector clips on (assuming you've taken the tray out). Once that is off, to remove the lighter assembly, undo the torx screw on the inside of the lighter recess.
