1.9 non turbo woes

Hi Guys,

First post on hear to please be gentle with me.

I have a Dispatch Van with 1.9 non turbo engine ( I think its a dw8) "T" plate 145k on the clock, had it for 3 years and she's been fine approximately 6 months ago she was getting a little lazy starting so I put new glow plugs in other than that its been a great runner.

2 weeks ago it flat refused to start and then without a good reason came back to life, it did this for several days with no real pattern to it eventually not wanting to start at all and ending up with me being towed back home

. Reading forums and researching it all pointed to the stop solenoid which was a pain to remove but after finally de-armouring it new cam belt later its all back working but I now have to stall it to stop. I need to find a new standard stop solenoid so if anyone can offer advice I would be grateful. (Lucas injector pump)

The second problem that appears to have developed is that whilst cold it blows smoke I cant be 100% sure but I think it diesel as opposed to oil, after 1/4 - 1/2 mile it clears up and is fine.

Checked for air/fuel leaks but nothing is apparent. Any suggestions what might be causing this ?

Any help / suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Wayne and welcome, don't worry, we're gentle on here

The stop solenoids in these pumps are not like the standard Lucas stop solenoid and I'm not even sure if they're available as a non-immobiliser replacement for your pump. You may find that the solenoid itself is OK and it's the immobiliser that's playing up. Try disconnecting the wires to the solenoid and applying 12V direct to them via a small fuse. Finally, it may be a good idea to have a chat with tyour local diesel specialist (most towns have on hiding on an Industrial Estate somewhere) and see if they can supply a suitable stop solenoid.

It is not a good idea to stall the engine to stop it at all. Use the emergency stop lever on your pump instead. It will be similar to the one in the photo (from an earlier but related pump. Press the tab away from the screw head to effect the stop.

What colour is the smoke?

Generally, black means incomplete combustion due to lack of air (i.e. blocked air filter) causing excessive soot, grey/white means incomplete combustion of the fuel and the colour comes from unburned fuel in the exhaust. Blue means the engine is burning oil.

If the smoke clears fully as soon as the engine is warm and does not then smoke when you boot it quickly to high revs then you have nothing to worry about. A bit of smoke when cold is not unusual..

Ah the DW8 stop solenoid.

The problem here is a dealer will sell you a "coded anti start" which is what you have. The one that's fitted is a tube thing that you cannot really do much with.

Aftermarket ones will either not cut the fuel or not allow it to pass any fuel, apart from one

There is a topic on here with the correct details, it took the OP a lot of trouble to get the right one but they did post the details. I'll post back when I find it for you.

Take feed from reverse light switch if needed as I mentioned in that topic, its not too far away and it works on position 2 which is what you need.

Thanks for the quick answers, I have checked on the stop solenoid and it appears that it could be a reasonably easy fix but the switched live that appears to feed the old solenoid could turn off while cranking the engine, will have the volt meter on that the check.

Smoke I would describe more as white although whilst cold there is much more than I would like to see to the point where its clearly visible through the wing mirror as you drive away soon as the engine is warm there is no trace of the smoke at all. Doesnt smoke at all when you boot it not that this is an engine that responds to being booted

. Just seems strange that this has happened at the same time as the immobiliser stopping talking to the stop solenoid.

Just in case anyone looks this thread up I bought a new solenoid of ebay, works perfectly. I used the switched live that fed the original immobiliser enabled solenoid and its all fine switching on and more importantly off when you want it too.

That's good to know you're all sorted now.

Would you mind posting either the Ebay link / picture or better still the part numbers instead please ? , I do know that some of the usual solenoids do not work with this pump, they either cut the fuel off permanently or do not stop the flow.

Its my pleasure especially if it helps others out, incedentaly I was led to believe from what I had read on different forums that finding a suitable replacement could be difficult the reality seemed to suggest otherwise.

More "popular" now then, it was difficult before to get one that actually worked, you would think being a Lucas pump would be easy but at that time, no.

Anyway good to know you're all sorted and also good to see its now readily available too.
