Keep the Hdi or take the Dci?

Post by trooper30 »

The wifes down in somerset at the min and for those that dont know she has a 2000 Xantia Hdi with no blowers and the heater stuck on hot!
Her dad has a 2001 Scenic 1.9 Dci for sale and as a favor has offered the wife a straight swap for her Xantia! A no brainer I hear you say.

The Scenic has 145k on the clock with full service history, but 145k seems a little to high for my taste as the Xantia only has 82k on the clock. There is link to his auto trader add at the bottom, masively over priced!
Does anyone have any experience of the 1.9 Dci lump or is is basicaly the same as the Hdi lump?
Practicaly it makes sence for us to take the scenic, but 145k puts me off it to be honest. Is the Dci ok at that mileage?
The Scenic is in excelent order, I have drive it and I know its a better car that the xantia, but i cant get past the 145k thing.

Would you do the swap for somting that works with higher miles, or stick the the Xantia which lower mileage but always has some issue going on :-k

I wouldnt be swapping a HDI or even a blender for a 1.9DCI they suffer major mechanical failures, not a good engine at all that one, Renault really slipped up, keep the HDI and reconnect the heater flap cable.

Service Citroen is awesome, it shows me pictures of all the parts i used to be able to buy............

Renault is a completely seperate manuafacturer and use their own engines, so definitely not an Hdi. I too have heard about problems with the Dci units.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

HDi, no doubt about it.

Personally, I wouldn't touch the DCi with a barge pole.

I can't see how a Scenic can be better than a late s2 HDi Xantia!?
Keep the lower miles car and see off it's gremlins and you (and the Missus!)
should ultimately be happier bunnies...

As one of the few people flying the flag for Renault on here, I'll try not to be biased :D

I need to correct a few people up there ^

The dCi is well known for turbo failures, but not this version. This car will have the unit that produces 105 BHP, as opposed to the later versions producing 120 BHP which give huge problems. To be honest, I've heard of very, very few problems with them. If continued to be pampered with good servicing etc, it should go well. But possibly not as well as a HDi :D

I don't think it's worth it to be honest, there's plenty of Scénics out there with much lower mileages, and some versions such as the Monaco which have a leather interior etc, if you're into that sort of thing.

Overall though, the Phase 1 Scénic is a pretty solid car, as is that version of the dCi engine. So if you really want to... it wouldn't be all that bad :)[/u]

No, I didn't see MrR9UKE being unbiased to Renault...
OK, a helpful alternate perspective maybe.

What I've seen time and time again on the forum here is folk saying they're
moving on with something else after passing up with their Xantia only to be
back sometime later chastened and Xantia'd up again having realised their
mistake; sometimes with a car not quite as good as the one thay had.

If you found driving the Renault worked for you, a loan within the family
could be a 'soft' way to break the Xantia habit but also an opportunity to
see if the grass is actually green elsewhere and a re-swap could fix any
rift in the spasce/time continuum!
