C5 tyre size change 215 to 205?

Post by fastbatard »

Looking at tyres for the C5. It currently has 215 55 16 fitted but I've noticed that 205 55 16 are considerably cheaper. Has anyone fitted this tyre size to their C5?

205.55.16 is a much lower profile (obviously profile is a proportion of the width, less width, less profile depth) and will effect the gearing, speedo and the ride. You would also need to inform your insurance of the tyre change as not doing so might well void your policy should it be in an accident. This might incur a cost.

205.55.16 are fitted to most newer shape (55 onwards) Ford Focus's and Citroen C4s, they do look quite a bit smaller and narrower.

I would not go down that route, you should stick with the cars true size. Ideally speed rating too as they run 'W' rated tyres, though many seem to wear Vs now as they are cheaper.

Were you looking at budget tyres or premium brands?

I know Michelins, which is what I like to stick with, are around £140 each fitted, or thereabouts.

As citroenmad said changing the size of the tyres may cause problems with insurance and also with comfort and performance. It is advisable that you get the right size and of a decent brand obvisouly the michelin premacys being the preferred tyre. If you cant afford new tyres try some part worns on ebay, i got a pair of 5mm dunlops for £30, theres a few sellers who sell very decent part worns and by all accounts a branded set of part worns is better than new budgets

Interestingly, changing wheel or tyre sizes from original means an MoT fail.

That is, here in France.

I'd definitely stick to the original sizes as mentioned.
Though £140 a tyre is abit much for me.

My C5 came with almost new Cooper Zeon CS6 tyres which so far have been good in the wet and dry.

Here a site link with mostly positive reviews of them :
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Cooper/Zeon-CS6.htm

They are available at very reasonable price of under £70 in some places
see here for details :

Seems like i was quite lucky with these being fitted and it was a buying point for me having the same tyres all round although i was unsure how they would perform but atleast i had heard of Cooper as a tyre maker.
:)

Tim
