Torque setting on camshaft.

Post by AndersDK »

Hi all fellow Citronians :)
- been a while since I was around last time.

A question has popped up and developed to be a PITA
On a camshaft in a standard TU / XU engine, you have the bearing blocks to locate the camshaft while running.

Digging in the Haynes manuals for the various late '80 and 90 models with the popular TU engine family, there is no torque setting given for the bolts for these bearing blocks.

Only setting you can find is the "camshaft thrust fork retaining bolt" torque setting, which is given as 16Nm.

Is this the answer to my question ?
It seems a bit on the low side using this torque setting for an axle bearing block.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Anders

I'm afraid I only use torque settings for cylinder heads, everything else I do up until it 'feels right', I would suggest using a 6" long (sorry 150mm) spanner pulled down tight with one hand.

Hi Anders,

Good to see you re-surface!

I looked up 1990 BX 1.6 (XU5J) on Autodata and yes, it says camshaft carrier/caps 15Nm.

I looked up the BX valver manual (not Haynes) and it said 1mdaN.

From bitter experience, I discovered Haynes were not so right on the 405 cam cap torques!

Thanks guys :P

I found out why the TU engine has no such torque info in the manuals

On the TU engines the camshaft bearings are line-bored in the cylinder head - with no removable bearing blocks.
No wonder why there is no torque setting for these bearing blocks then ...

BTW : just for reference, should anyone not be familiar with the unit mdaN.
1mdaN = 1daNm = 1 deka Nm = 10 x 1Nm = 1kg/m

Thanks :D
