Xantia Starting

Hi,m y 1997 Xantia td. When I start up, [ cold or warm] the engine fails to pickup for about a second or two , but when it does I get a large plume of smoke . The engine runs smoothly though . any ideas ?

Glow plugs or air ingress.

My thoughts too.

Ingress is probably a bit more likely if it happens when its warm.

Try squeezing the primer bulb three or four times, then try to start it to see if there's any improvement, this does not always determine the cause but its a quick and easy test.

Possible air ingress points:

Leak off pipes between injectors, if they're hard replace them anyway.

Primer bulb

Pipe between bulb and fuel filter housing

O-ring between the base of the housing and heat exchanger

Housing thermostat

Housing lid

Elbow piece from lid towards pump.

Size adaptor between lid and pump.



Replace as much fuel line from the primer to the pump as you can with clear silicon tube to check for air.
