Windscreen sealant

Post by Toby_HDi »

What do people use to seal the scuttle on a Xantia?

Due to a matrix replacement (not my Activa) I'm going to have to take the scuttle off. This is all well and good but the one part of the job I didn't do last time round was resealing it.

Any tips or advice? What to use and how to apply it?
Toby

Hi Toby

I just stuck mine back down with black silicone, made sure the screen and scuttle were super clean and dry then apply the silicone to the scuttle and at the base of the screen above the heater intake in a blob and wiggle the scuttle into position, fit the two clips and then weight it down against the screen if needed.

Then after a night to let it dry run a stanley knife blade along the scuttle to remove the excess sealant and peel it off, job done 8-)

I'd suggest polyurethane, in black. Prep area carefully with wax and grease remover first.

Do a "dry fit" and apply masking tape to the adjacent edges (trim and glass) before laying a thin bead down and pushing the trim against glass. Carefully tool off wet sealant, allow to tack off and peel away tape. When pulling the tape away, aim to pull it back over itself - this minimises the stringiness of any threads which may form.

Tacking time may be anything from 20 minutes to a few hours depending on temperature and sealant type - make a little test panel on some wood or scrap materials.
