fuel pump confusion

Unread post by the jester »

I have a 406 1.9 TD engine, its an XUD D8A.

it has a bosch fuel pump,

Image

Im trying to put this into another vehicle, but was discussing with a friend bout wirong the fuel pump.

he had a look and suggested it may have an anti theft immobiliser under the plate in the picture.

I though, as a novice to these, that it was lucas pumps, on 2.1s that had the anti theft device, one of the reasons i picked this type of engine in the first place, to avoid the issue.

can anybody adviseme,

is this an anti theft protected pump?
can it be removed to rune with power to the fuel cut off only
how is that done?

if not what is the alternative

many thanks in advance :D

Yes it does have an immobiliser in the pump.

The 2.1 has an electronic pump apart from the very early ones (a bit rare now) , these will have an immobilizer

The 1.9 (from about 95) has an immobilizer too, your's does from what I can see of your picture. The stop solenoid is under the metal end plate.

It can be removed and done away with although I do not think its practical to do it with the pump fitted to the engine.

Earlier (say to about 94) pumps of either Bosch or Lucas variety do not have this.

To complicate it slightly, your pump (as all 406' 1.9's) have an electronic advance unit too, so you need the small ECU box (usually on the off side front wing) and the wiring to the pump.

It may be easier (random thought here) to go and get a normal pump off a 306 1.9TD, must be pre 95 though otherwise you'll be no better off. :)

Scrapyard :) , probably best option.

Make sure you get a Bosch one off a turbo engine. Caution: 306DT's old shape are usually Bosch, new shape are usually Lucas. Although you want an earlier one without the immobiliser although with a pump off its not difficult to do as per Jim's link.

I would say take the pump off you have and do it but as you're transplanting the unit and have electronic advance on the pump you'd need a few bits, it can be done its not hard but if you can get a pump cheaply it might be easier.

Try to get the bracket the pump comes with too if possible. I do not think they change (ie: If its Bosch it will be a straight swap, no bracket needed) but I'm not sure. Don't get a Lucas pump or you'll need the high pressure pipes and the injectors as well.

If you get one from something fairly old like a 405 it will almost certainly have a non armoured pump, you can fit a Lucas but you will have to change the pipes as wel is the injection order is different. 2.1 pumps fitted the the XM are all non armoured until '96'

Agree with Peter :)

One tiny point, the very last few 405's (N and P plate) have a keypad immobilizer on the D's / TD's, its under the centre console behind the handbrake not in front like a 306. Avoid these as you`ll be no better off.

Best thing to do is look at the pump in question, if you cannot see the stop solenoid then you don't want it unless you want to de-amour it.

Basically, proceed the same as you would to fit a new belt but set the pump to the middle of its adjustment.

Then you can use a dial gauge to do it properly or by ear*

You may be able to mark where the pump was if you cannot see and fit the replacement in the same place, its likely to not be 100% but it should not be too far off.

*This does take a lot of practise, although its easy its not something you can do easily unless you've listened to a few of them and know what they sound like when they are OK / retarded / advanced.

im thinking retarded

so approximately in the same position as the pump thats on mine now?

i had in mind the relative position of the cog in its roytation would be important?

The belt timing is separate and would have to be done first. The sprocket is locked in one place so that's not a bit concern really, that's kind of the 'basic' setting, ie: its on the right tooth.

Moving the pump is the fine adjustment in effect, although it is critical.

If you have not changed a timing belt on these engines it may be best to get some practical help first. :) , what you are asking is not difficult at all but I think we might struggle to try to "type" you through it.

I'm not sure where the timing belt guide is come to think about it. There might be one on youtube if Jim does not have one, although tis such a relatively simple engine to do it on there might not be one.

mmm
as i though,
timing belt is simple, did it today in fact, then thought about the pump solenoid,

what concerns me is getting a pump from another engine and putting it on mine,

ill have a trawl around the net

cheers for all your help !

If you've done a belt then it won't be difficult.

The only annoying part is sometimes getting the sprocket off the pump, you need something that fits inside it to push it out, if that makes sense.

There's no "upside down" with the fuel pump and the drive shaft to the sprocket is keyed with a woodruff key so you cannot (unless it is missing) get it wrong. Then you would just refit the belt and time up as normal with a belt change etc.

I think you can leave the sprocket bolted in place and take the pump off but I think its easier to slacken the belt as its far safer to do it that way.

Theres a peugeot scrapyard place in denton manchester called pugbitz.
I used them when i had a 406. Dont think they do a mail order type service but worth bearing in mind for anyone with a pug and can collect.
