ZX jumping out of gear

Post by C.J. »

Anyone know if the linkage is operated by cables, and is it adjutsable, or am I looking at something more sinister and expensive to repair here?
Jumps out of 2nd and 4th on coming off the 'gas', and a bit hit and miss finding 1st.
1991 1.4 petrol btw.

It's linkage not cable on these.

It does not sound good, broken detent spring maybe. I thought about a broken tooth but I think that would make it fall out all the time. A replacement box will be the cheapest option unless you wanted to do a transmission repair, not actually difficult just time consuming.

Before condemning the transmission check the linkage condition, if there's loads of slack and / or the gearbox mounting on the inner wing is bad this can cause it to move around a bit. Probably not enough on its own to pop out but combined with a floppy linkage it may do.

Thanks for that. I'll check it out when it comes back from the mot station.

No. Pretty sure it's not that. Goes into 3rd, 4th and 5th dead smoothly imo.

As I say, I'll get it onto the ramps whan I get it back from having the welding done.

Thanks for that Mal. I'll make a note of the number.
Just got to add up all the potential costs first, welding, wheel bearing and mot, and if it's starting to get 'naughty, I'll 'block' it. (auction, not crusher  )

Talking of wheel bearing.
Dirt cheap to buy, but are they easy enough to fit DIY? Front btw. apparently.
Didn't hear owt myself like, but who am I to argue against a friendly (and my mate) mot tester?
I never look for 'favours on mot's though tbh. I'd rather know, warts an'all. :x

That's too much for a gearbox. I would take a guess of around £50 for a good one, they are plentyful.

Front wheel bearings, not difficult although I had a press not really sure if you'll manage it without.

The reply I suspected in reality. Garage beckons then I suppose, £££'s.

There are kits available to withdraw and refit bearings, but not cheap if it is a one-off. Better to use a hydraulic press as it is important to get the bearing cassette pushed in square and tight.

If a friendly garage is local, you could potentially save money by taking just the hub and the new bearing to them.

Should be a bit cheaper then as they only need so spend a bit of time taking the circlips out, pressing bearing out / in and refitting circlips.

Expect to replace the lower ball joint pinchbolt (they seem to snap when I go near them), on an undo operation usually. I think in theory you should change the driveshaft nut too, but they are re-usable in most cases.

My local garage only charged 1.5 hours labour to change the FWB on our Picasso - not worth getting the tools out at that rate!

The MA gearbox fitted to the 1.4 has a habit of lunching its final drive, so 2nd hand units are sought after. Having said that, this doesn't sound like a box failure to me - I'd be looking for a broken / worn engine mount (does the engine rock back and fore when revved?), or a broken pivot on the linkage somewhere.

i thik from memory it wont just be the hub you will need to take to the local garage, as im sure the leg and hub are one unit,

Malcolm, how many ZXs have you worked on? Hundreds! You know that the lower hub assembly comes off the strut!

As for CJ's gearbox problem, classic symptoms of worn synchros or possibly a duff bearing on either the input or output shaft. I cannot remember how many BMC/BL gearboxes I diagnosed with these very symptoms. The selectors only line up the gears, they do not hold them in position, so unless something has come adrift, you'll need to look at a replacement gearbox.

CJ, chances are that the box has been run with the incorrect gearbox oil. Only use TOTAL BV.
