2.0 hdi xsara dw10 - how to remove thermostat

Post by eurotrotter »

hi gang i want to check if my thermostat is working ok, so i need to remove it, is it screwed in, how do i remove it, i have gotten this far already:

https://picasaweb.google.com/1096236004 ... 4877792770

do i test it by simply dropping it into hot water.

btw, the reason im testing it, is because my car is slightly overheating, could this be caused by a faulty thermostat, or would faulty thermostat result in a car not reaching operating temperature?!

thanks

I don't think there's a circlip on those, it might just pull out at that, be aware you will probably want a new o ring seal.

If you take pic from directly above looking down we will be able to see, but you should be able to see if its got a bit circlip holding it in.

Just lever it upwards...

You may find the seal is a bit sticky on the edge of the stat house making it look like its stuck in there - but it wont be...

Lever it upwards with a screw driver...

As Paul says. Take care, as you may want to re-use the seal. IIRC, when I fitted Xantia with a new thermostat from GSF, it didn't come with a new seal.

I think thermostats are supposed to fail "safe" and stay open, rather than fail closed which would cause overheating. I imagine there's always some exception. Perhaps better just to stick a new thermostat in and be done with it.

No, they dont fail safe open or closed its luck to when they stick..

Ive had one fail closed, resulting in boling rear head bank on my V6 SEi XM, that was just after an engine swap too - and guess were the thermostats are on the PRV V6's?? Yup, under the top engine mount bracket, which means top mount off again...
