Whistling from V6

Unread post by lexi »

I have a whistling noise from top of head on Xantia. No it aint bluddy Roger Whittaker

Seems to be from right on top of the head toward the rear bank of inlet manifolds.
Noise rises as you rev and you can hear it going along at slow/ medium speed.
Wonder if inlet manifold gasket would cause this noise?

Hoping it aint HG of course.

Won't be HG lexi.... They don't whilstle...

Maybe it's just happy

Most likely inlet manifold gasket. They cost a stupid amount from the Stealers...

Just over two quid last time I got one....

Another distinct possibility is the blanking rubber over a little pipe stub on the back of the manifold (on the RH side as you lean over it) has perished and is leaking. It's pretty common and well worth a check. See if the whistling stops when you touch it. If it's all soft and bloated then that's another sign it's gone past it's best.

Best to sort it as it could be causing a weak mixture...

Lexi,

If you need an inlet manifold gasket, let me know.

Citroen only sell them in packs of 10 and I'm sure I've got one or two left over. Finding them might be another matter though!

Thanks David.
I do have one from when I was going to change rear plugs.

Anyway: I still cant trace this. Took the plastic covers off for a listen at idle. It is barely discernable at tickover but increase the revs and you hear it just above the engine

It may be coming from tensioner area but I cant be sure. Driving along at 30 with a window open it sounds like a worn disc brake kind of noise.....high constant squeaking. Nothing like that of course so deffo the engine area.

Lexi,

I'd suspect either an auxiliary belt thenioner/ jockey or a cam belt tensioner/jockey initially.

Try a run with the auxiliary belt off and see if the noise disappears. I hope it does as then you know the area.

It could well be the dual-mass crank pulley starting to fail. paint some lines across it and if they move then that's the problem. Often the first sign they're failing is a little chirrup on startup and engine stop.

If the noise persists them you'll need to delve into the cambelt; not as frightening as it seems.

That statement was frightening enough

No, honestly, don't take my word for it Lexi, have a chat with Paul (CitroenXM) as he's been into his V6 cambelt recently and found it OK... If you can do a 1.9TD belt then a V6 belt will hold no terrors.

Fingers crossed it's the auxillary belt [-o<
