What a good car! (Xantia)

Put three new spheres on my Hdi90 yesterday (see earlier posting).

Really pleased, but still a little apprehensive because today I needed to fetch 24 stone slabs @ 11kg each from a depot about 20miles away, rural French (i.e. bumpy) roads. So all in one go, didn't want to go twice.

Rear seats down, spread slabs, drove back home with no probs at all. Susp. at back was down about an inch. Car rode beautifully with us two plus a full tank of fuel. Didn't feel to be down at the back or up at the front.

Naturally I didn't tear home and acceleration was a bit down, but very rewarding.

A bit different to a Viva I had in early 70's when I put 4 bags of cement in the boot and drove home with the front wheels practically off the ground! Scary.

What is the safest load you could carry in a Xantia saloon?

Ok loads in cars...

Beat this... About 20sq ft of wall tiles, so thats around 40 box's, then around 10 box's of floor tiles, hardibacker floor boards, about 4 of them, 6 tubs of adhisive, 5 bags of grout.....

Result?? Well, in all honesty, there is a weight limit when the car just wont lift up... I found it...

I think she did lift about 5 mm...

Car: Xantia HDi 110 Exclusuive, at the time 168k on clock, but poor LHM in a brown colour...

I did hear of a BX estate with the boot (seats down) being filled with rubble up to the windows then even though it didn't rise driven several miles to be unloaded with no ill effects

Hi, I once had 17cwt (old money) of ballast in the back of a GSA estate, didn't have far to go on level good roads. The man at the weighbridge in the aggrate yeard was rather surprised but it was very cheap collecting it from the yeard where the boats came in. Lived by the sea then. The suspension did not want to rise much, but it worked fine after I unloaded it. G

30 bags of cement? At 6:1 for mortar, you'll be dragging 180×25kg bags of sand home next...

I would personally recommend two trips for the grey powder! Done a stack of 300+kg loads myself.

This question is a little close to my heart!

I carried multple large amounts of weight in my xantia, infact I transported tons and tons and tons and once actually snapped the rear shock but I think It must have been close to a ton.

I took 600+KG of tiles without even noticing, used to fill the back with rubble, logs, tiles, sand, cement, oil.. you name it, I transported it.

I went into one of the sheds and bought 500kg of sand and threw it in the back of my 406 not even thinking about it, the back went down quite a bit but it was only a mile from home so I risked it.. got bloody knicked by the cops and slaps with points and a fine!

Cut a long story short, the xantia was an amazing tool and I never realised how amazing it was for carrying weight until it went!

My dad used to transport the slate from full sized snooker table in his BX estate from Suffolk to Bordeaux.
