PRV vs ES9

Post by mongoose100 »

I have an obsession with the XM, one has popped up for sale close to where I live :D She's a 91 V6 SEi auto with 145,000km

A few questions tho;

Will the old PRV have a binge drinking problem compared to my V6 Xantia? (Been told they drink copious amounts)

Just how much more comfy are these old girls?

Any other light to be shed will be great...

Thanks guys :)
Regan.

If I drove my 24v PRV nicely I was getting 28 - 30mpg off it on a run, in and around town I was getting 24mpg.

Economy is around the same as the Xantia V6.

The seats in the XM are much bigger and much wider then those in the Xantia and are much more comparable to arm chairs. You sort of sink into them when you sit in them.

On the PRV V6 you have timing chains, not a belt to deal with as well.

145000km isn't that much. One of the members on here has one with almost 200k MILES! on the clock.

You won't know unless you try one and if the price is right, in my book anyway, it's a car that everyone should try at least once.

I have a PRV powered 605.

Like other 605s I've driven, it is less responsive to the pedal than a newer motor. A sticky idle air controller and worn throttle switch may contribute to the lagginess.

Economy is great on the open roads here, no questions about it. However I think it's just inertial mass of the engine vs weight/speed of the car meeting at a "sweet spot". The hills of NZ may present a challenge.

Were a manual gearbox/ES9J4 driveline to come along at the right price, I would swap it in a jiffy. For that matter, the 3.2 Alfa GTA V6 would be preferable again...

You cannot beat a PRV for engine intake noise campared to the ESj..

The PRV was designed in the late 60's to early 70's in an eira when engines could make a nice "Growl" noise.. the ESJ had to be muted for modern reasons...

The PRV is not an economy engine.. I think 30mpg gets when you do 56mph every where...

I ran a PRV V6 XM for 2 years, ok it was on Gas, but the equvilent MPG was around 25 to 28 mpg..

Overall.. one thing gave me headaches, Starter problems, !! Solved easilly by fitting a DIRECT push button starter wire from inside the car to the solinoid.. YES this enabled a start while in gear, but I never had the "CLICK" on the starter again, which is a common problem

The wiring loom runs down the side of the block on the cam chain side, it gets all a bit warm in there and it had melted a few wires..

Other then that, 200k on this PRV (unknown history though) im starting to get rattley cam on startup and over run, time for a new lump ...

I think they are great units!
