Rattle from front suspension...Xantia 2 2.0 HDI

Post by Dannyboy »

Hi all. I have a well worn 2.0 HDi Xantia 177K on the clock. It goes well.
There is a rattle from the front suspension when on rough roads. I can`t find anything worn or loose. The car recently went through the NCT ( Irish MOT )
in which they give the suspension a good going over and they had no comments. It sounds like it could be coming from the front struts. The ride is good and the handling doesn`t feel loose. Any ideas ? ....rgds dannyboy

It'll be either from one of the ball joints, anti-roll bar or bottom ball joint being the favourites failing that if its a 110 bhp model it could be the front brake calipers rattling on the mounting brackets, try gently pulling up the handbrake whenever the noise appears, if that stops the noise then you can eliminate it by fitting additional springs behind the calipers to brace them.

Almost definitely one or both anti-roll bar drop links. You might as well replace both at the same time though.

Are you sure the sound, isn't the pipes calling?

Seriously, mine rattled and it was the heatshields - little pieces of pressed sheet aluminium - on the outer tie rods.
