XUD Headgasket type

Unread post by citroenxm »

Hi all
i am going to need to do a headgasket on an xud due to water in the oil.... However. The gasket has got 2 notches then just seperated by a larger edge 3 notches... They are NOT all grouped together before you all shout and tell me its a 5 notch. So my q is, is it a 2 notch or a 3 notch gasket????

Im guessing a 3 notch meaning i look at the notches along the centre line...

Thanks
paul

Hi Paul

Do they not do the 'repair' gaskets, the laminated ones, they come on a 'one size fits all' basis for the XM.

According to my BoL the thickness notches are located to one corner of the gasket.

Coolant in the oil is possibly a bad sign though. Not that I'm doubting your experience Paul, but when I discovered my HG had gone we called Triple A Citroen and their first question was "is it just losing water, no water in the oil?" apparently they reckoned coolant in the oil was a sign the head has cracked  .
Although my head was cracked to buggery and there was no mayonnaise in the sump....

If you google "PSA Head Gasket" and click the PDF link "Head Gaskets PSA Group" (usually comes up second in hit list) it tells you all you need to know about notches etc.

Having said that, I just whacked on an MLS "repair gasket" for my convenience :-**

I've always fitted the thickest one, without any issue.

It's 3 notch, ie the thickest one - the other 2 notches are used to show what engine it's for AFAIR.

Ah, now thats conflicting Richard...

As the PDF mentioned above shows the top two notches are the thickness, and the bottom 3 are engine ID....

Hi Paul

Just consulted Mr Haynes : D8B engine (XUD9 TF) I think that's yours it says : piston projection 0.54-0.65, 1 notch, 0.65-0.77, 2 notches, 0.77-0.82, 3 notches. If the gasket has another three notches, disregard them.

This doesn't really help a lot though as you have taken the metal off the head not the block. If you set the valves open and see where the heads come to in relation to the surface of the head I'm sure you will find you have sufficient clearance, to be certain check the piston projection as well.

I remember once fitting to thin a gasket to a Perkins engine with the result that it would start without heating - unheard of in those days but the valves still missed the pistons :D
