Although this is a Pug question, it's the same engine as Citroen so I'll ask here first.
Friend's car, won't start, Cranks ok, there is fuel pressure. Are there any known common issues for this ?
He doesn't have a code reader handy but is trying to get hold of one to use.
Where is the CPS on these ?

TDC Sensor is the first thing to check then if you have fuel pressure as if you did not have FP then I'd say the LP pump in the tank.
It should be either on the top / side of the transmission as it has to 'see' the flywheel really, or on some later engines (perhaps only the 1.4HDi) its near the crank pulley.
I have not looked at one for about five years, but its got to be in either of those places.

The 306 HDi has an immobiliser but it's controlled totally by the remote locking fob and doesn't show any lights in the car.
Although you say the engine is cranking fine, try jump leads to a running car or a different "good" battery. I've had this on a couple of 306 HDi's where they sound like they should fire but because the battery voltage isn't quite right it wouldn't fire.
When I plugged a good battery in she fired straight away.
David.
