C5 v6 mk1's buying advice

Post by KP »

Anyone got any tips other than checking the expensive auto box? I've seen a few come up cheap and I'm thinking of snagging one while cheap and them just using it for a few weeks in the summer and flogging it on as we need something bigfor the summer holiday and fuel won't be too much of a worry for it's short term ownership.

I basically want to wait till the end of the summer before I start to set about getting an FL2 hse(saving the pennies slowly!) and the SSS is not big enough to get our clobber there and back for a long week away and rentals are stupid money where as £500 seems to be able to get a goer of a c5 exclusive se, non hdi, and would be fun to own one for a short while. All I'm I reckon it would cost me no more than 1k including re-taxing and moting as most that cheap have short t&t, if any. Yes I know it won't be perfect for that price but as long as it stops and goes and is safe I'll just stick it on here or eBay to recoup some of the purchase price and maybe fuel will have gotten cheaper then lol

Will, my only advice to you is this:

Get a Xantia....

There's a lot of fun stuff on a C5 that does not seem very amenable to fixing at home from what I see. A Xantia is infinitely fixable...

A £500 C5 is bound to have some 'interesting' issues...

Thing is Jim they are older so the gearbox's become more of a concern than on a c5. Not to worried about toys, as long as it goes and stops and is safe then anything that's broke is possibly a way to get it even cheaper or at least something to possibly fix given enough time and help retain some value.

Most of the last crop of V6 Xantias that sold were low milers.

Could you not just hire a Natural Breeders vehicle for the hols

C5s are reliable cars and a lot of the more common things are an easy fix. Id always recommend one.

A V6 C5 is something I would like at some time, so I say definitely go for it. At the money they go for it would be silly not to, surprised ive not had one yet!

You will have to let us know what you think to it though :)

Enjoy :D

I've just done it and the jury is still out! If you wait till I get back from the south of France in May you could buy mine. LPG kit makes it HDI running costs

I would NEVER EVER buy a petrol for SHORT journeys!! EVER

You will end up with emulsifying oil because the engine never gets up to proper working temperture to dry out the engine internal condenstation. This then mixe's up in the oil if left unknown about and then premature engine wear sets in.

If you changed the oil every 1k or so then fair enough... you'll always be on cold running fuel with means higher mpg...

Get a DERV Xantia for short journeys... and a C5 Petrol V6 for long hauls.

Have you seen the one on autotrader? £3000 estate.
Think it's 13000 miles.
They won't take mine in part-ex as they would need to give me money back.

For short-term jollies I agree with Jim, a 3L V6 Xantia would likely put more of a smile on your face.
They do attract speeding tickets though.
