I wonder why the power steering is heavy??

Unread post by Dommo »

One thing I noticed about my green 2.1TD SX was that the PAS was always quite heavy, and a PAS 'malfunction' was one thing flagged up at the MOT.

So I set about checking the LHM tank --> HP pump pipe for air leaks, it looked OK. So if it's not that it could be crappy LHM with dirty LHM filters. I set about removing the tank and filters, words couldn't describe the crap in the LHM filters - so I took a photo!

The LHM in the tank was a disgusting murky brown colour, and with the filter in that state it's no wonder the PAS was heavy  After a bit of cleaning with petrol and a small brush the filter was quite a lot cleaner:

The return filter was much cleaner but still filthy. After cleaning up the filters and putting some hydroflush in the PAS is much much better!

Wow, a job worth doing then :D :D

Very gratifying to get such a good result. Can anyone produce a dirtier LHM filter I wonder?

I'd say it's time to service the height correctors too.

Yes that's one of the jobs to be done after it's MOT'd!

Certainly was a good job I delved into the LHM tank - the stuff that came out wasn't far off coca cola colour..
