Identifying fuel pump makes.

Unread post by C.J. »

I'm going to see a Xsara 1.9D estate tomorrow, obviously with a view to purchase if it's in reasonable condition for its 135,000 miles and £500 asking price on a 'T'.
The BIG purchasing point though is obviously which pump is it running on? Bosch or Lucas, and I haven't got the foggiest how the differences can be identified tbh.
Any clues or what to look for would be much appreciated, as much vegetable oil at reasonable purchase price awaits useage if possible.

The bosch pump is usually physically bigger.

Here are two pics to help:

Lucas (I think this is actually a DW8 one):

Bosch:

The lucas one, the levers are easier to see and operate as they are parallel with the pump top.

Hope that helps. Take a look on Ebay for say "xud lucas pump" or "xud bosch pump" and compare them.

Post here if in doubt which it is you are looking at.

Bear in mind that the Bosch fuel pump in Andy's post is from a turbocharged engine.
If the car you're looking at is a non turbo then it won't have the bulky hamburger-esque boost compensator on the top of it, but it is essentially the same pump.

Not familiar with Lucas pumps though...

I did wonder but I could not find a Bosch pic without its flying saucer attached :D , and that pic is the back side of it too :(

The levers are flat on the Lucas as per my pic, the Bosch ones are upright mostly, if that makes sense.

Good point Alex and Andy :D

This is the non-turbo Bosch.. Not the best picture. It was taken to show the emergency stop lever... The big read arrow..

Oh dear. Thanks lads, but I fear this is going to be a bit of a nightmare, as I'll probably be looking in the wrong place at the wrong items.
P'raps I should print these pictures off and look like a complete nerd in front of the owner.

It is a non turbo 1.9D btw.
Why can't they just have a big sticker on the top of them ey?

It's easy... on Bosch pumps the cold start cable (the one that runs from the thermostat housing) is on the back, on the Lucas pumps it's on the front. Simples....

Injectors are also Different!!

Lucas injectors are all tall and slim...

Bosch slightly stumpy, but taper up to the top...

These above are LUCAS injectors

This listing below is for a Bosch Pump and has a close up of injectors...

Should also help identify...

Look in the area were a "Spark Plug" would be in a Petrol engine....

What are the chances of it being a Bosch pump anyway, and WHY didn't they just stick to one manufacturer I ask?

You know, I've just re-read your first post again and you said T reg, so its possible its quite likely to be a DW8 and not an XUD, in which case it will be a Lucas as there's never been a DW8 with a Bosch pump.

The N/A XUD was 'replaced' (sic) with the DW8 around this time.

If in real doubt, take pic (take others so owner does not wonder what you are doing) and post it here and we'll confirm for you for sure.

Andy,

That pic that you posted of the Lucas on an engine - the engine in that picture IS an XUD...

You can tell from the position of the Heater Plugs.... The DW8 Heater plugs are in a position the XUD's SHOULD of been in from the start, they are behind the injectors facing downwards and are long reach like the TUD plugs... This makes them VERY accessable for replacement...

The XUD ones are as pictures above. Of course with a Lucas pump, the 4th one is NOT a problem, as the XUD was designed for Lucas Pumps....
