car rev higher on full lock

Post by eurotrotter »

hey gang

i have a xsra hdi 3door coupe. and have noticed that the car revs higher when i full lock the wheel and hold it, is this normal, what is this?

i notice that the revs go a little bit above normal idle when i approach full lock also.

any ideas what this might be

thanks

Just before you get to full lock, most of the pressurised oil in the power steering is returned to the tank, so as not to force the mechanism.
The engine runs faster because of the reduced load.

I agree :)

Some cars (not sure if PSA have these) have a sensor in the return line and this in turn signals the ECU to increase the engine speed a fraction, only by about 100 rpm to compensate for it.
