02 C5 V6 timing belt tensioner

Post by Allanxantia »

I have found plenty of info on changing the belt on a V6, but they all refer to the old manual adjuster on the Xantia/XM/406 etc. My C5 has the "new" style of tensioner. I want to be fully prepped before I start, what is the tensioning procedure and how do I set it. Also I picked up a brand new water pump from a Xantia for 99p, but apparently needs modified, can anyone help?

Once the belt is on, use a square section key to rotate the inner metal part of the tensioner clockwise until the inner metal pointer meets the outer mark. Turn the engine over by hand a few turns and re-check to ensure the pointers meet. Adjust if neccesary.

Don't be alarmed that the pointers move when you turn the engine over, this is normal. Just make sure that once you have turned the engine over an EVEN number of times that the pointers align.

Allan,

These words may help. It's generic but describes it well. Otherwise Toby bang-on in what he says :D

I believe there is a lump you have to saw off the old-style pump to make the older style waterpump fit with the later type tensioner. Xantia_V6 knows how to do it!!!

The later type tensioner and later waterpump can be fitted to the older ES9J4 as a worthwile upgrade and replacement of the old dynamic tensioner...

Mine has been so done and it's good...

Really appreciate your input. I'll take the old pump off and cut the new one to fit. hopefully I can get by without the fancy camshaft pulley tensioner tools and the square section is 1/4 or 3/8?. I have fabricated the locking pins and belt clip.

I think the square in the tensioner is 1/4", but you can check on the new tensioner. it doesn't need much force.

To turn the cams, use a 12 point socket or ring spanner (12mm I think?) on the boss on the end of the cam.

On the subject of water pumps.

If I may mention that there is a cracking thread on the Coupé forum that goes into great detail and includes pictures of the modification.

All went well, except for leaving one of the pins in the front exhaust cam, luckily I realized I only had 4 and took it all apart again to find it still there, how on earth did I do that? All done. Could probably do it all in about 3-4 hrs next time, knowing some of the gotchas. You don't need all the special tools, locking pins (M8x75mm bolts) only

This is an interesting thread and I'm pleased I stumbled upon it as this is a job that I need to undertake on my V6 XM in the next couple of months.

If I bought the waterpump from the C5 and the tensioner from the C5 are these a direct swap without any modification needed?

Where's the best place to get the parts from to do the job? Citroen quoted me £600 for parts yesterday!

David,

As long as you match up the correct waterpump with the tensioner it is a direct swap. You can also use the new style tensioner with the older waterpump if you modify the waterpump slightly.

You do need to get the correct waterpump for your car though, there are about 4 different types, and some have different diameters.

Take at look at this thread on V6 Waterpumps

I got my waterpump from ECP though make sure they send you the right one. The site isn't completely accurate. Cambelt kit I can't speak for as I bought mine from a Coupé forum member as it was going at a good price.

Thanks Toby.

To summarise from that thread:

Early ES9J4 - original shape with hole, 73mm dia (if you just want to change the pump, not the belt/tensioner) 1201.C7

Early ES9J4 - (up to & including build code 8554) new shape for new tensioner but with the large diameter - 1201.F2

Late ES9J4 - (After build code 8555) new shape for new tensioner, small 63mm diameter - 1201.F6

Early ES9J4S (VVT engine- up to (and probably including) engine number 0074138) - New shape for new tensioner with different hole location (though the engine allready has the new shape and new tensioner on it - parts won't look any different) - 1201.E9

Late ES9J4S (VVT engine - after engine number 0074139) - Same as 'Late ES9J4' above (so it's not a fifth pump!)- 1201.F6
According to Citroen Service the part number for my water pump is 1201.F2. According to the list above this is the new style pump ready for the new style tensioner. It's also the right thickness I assume.

I think I'm just going to buy the recommended pump for my XM and if I need to cut the lobe off it then I'll do it.

Saves messing around and ensuring I get the right part.

Always sceptical about buying the full timing belt kit. I have done dozens of belts and never come across a roller that has play or is excessively noisy. There is a guy on ebay selling the rollers individually anyway if you find you need one. I got the whole job done for under £30. timing belt on ebay listed for a V6 safrane for a tenner, water pump listed for an XM for 99pence, 5 M8x75mm bolts as timing pins.

Resurrecting an old thread, the information on ES9 water pumps above is very useful, but I am not sure whether the 1201.F2 can be replaced by a 1201.E9, specifically, is the E9 the large or small diameter?

The http://www.peugeot406coupe.com/ website does not seem to exist today (does anyone know the owner of that site?)
