Key Decoding (Cruciform)

Unread post by addo »

Can anyone help with this? I know there are a few sites with basically the same text - it tells you how to measure a key with calipers then work out the cutting code.

Otherwise - is it marked on the door barrels?

Totally off topic, but "while I'm at it"... Eurovox cassette/radio with remote stacker, is flashing. Even when you tune it, the LED display flashes and after a bit shuts down again. Doesn't seem to prompt for any code, though. Could the internal memory battery be duff?

Thanks, Adam.

There are no code marking on the actual locks.
Measuring the key code for a cruciform key is a useful double check before you order factory made replacement keys.
If you have the key code written on a card the physical measuring confirms that the the same keys are still in use and that the original locks have not been changed.
In my experience with XM's and their spinning locks getting a local locksmith to copy a worn cruciform key has a less than 50% chance of producing a working key.
When retumblering the odd lock to make up a set I prefer to work with an actual key. When making up full sets I use new factory cut keys.

Hi John, saw your posts on another forum re XM locks/plips when Googling about; I have no docs with this car - the speedometer was tampered with and the books thrown away several years back.

Definitely no code card or reference to work from, just a reasonable principal key. I need to know how the measurements are interpreted and written up - do you know any of the websites I mean?

Hi Addo

I have never seen the Pug 605 locks so cannot tell if they are the same as the XM ones. Comparing XM's with other Citroens has proved interesting.
For example all XM cruciform locks use an extra security feature compared to the Xantia ones. In the same way the RF remotes on Mk2 XM's use an extra security feature compared to RF Xantia ones. This allows the Xantia remote plip to be reprogrammed but stops the XM sets from being mixed. I do know that the Pug 605 RF set uses identical looking components to the Mk2 XM. Would be interesting to see what the Pug lock sets look like.
Will try to look out as much Pug info as I can today.

Edit note: Have confirmed that the PUG 605 was fitted with XM type cruicform keys and declutchable XM type (spinning) door locks.
Cars should have been supplied 2 standard and one garage key.
IR plips on the Mk1 cars were independant and simply ring looped to the keys. That means that the processes that I use for changing XM lock innards will work just as well with 605 ones. Would need to see one to know if the lock outer bodies and plastic covers are identical enough with XM ones to be interchangable.

Can you not just get the Mechanical key code and get one cut?
For what we are about to receive may we be truly thank full.
