flat 206 1.9 diesel

Unread post by skertonman »

Hi all,

am hoping to pick someones brains ref my 2001 206 1.9 non turbo diesel, which has started running flat over the last few weeks.

Car has done 97 K miles and starts first time from cold though ticks over about 750 RPM which i think is a little slower than before.

circs are, from cold car starts, but is very flat/slow accelerating until it warms up, (shows 80 on temp gauge), and I mean dangerously slow as in NO acceleration to speak of.

Once warm the performance seems to be on a par with what it was prior to the poor cold running, and it seems to perform better as it it gets warmer.

There are no warning lights on the dash board, the glow plugs were changed last year and the fuel/air filter are good.

Looking at the engine there is what looks like a choke flap/butterfly between the airpipe from the airfilter and the inlet manifold which sits ontop of a diaphragm.

Is this a form of autochoke.

Any suggestions gratefully recieved.

Not sure if yours is fitted with a Cat, but if it has one it may have broken up or become blocked and causing a restriction in the exhaust system which would cause similar symptoms to those you are experiencing.

The 'butterfly' is the EGR system probably.

All 206's have cats, its possible as above its broken up a bit.

I'd be tempted to check the EGR system to start with, see here > http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... hp?t=34466

Yes all DW8's have EGR as far as I can tell for all countries, as I was looking for a non EGR exhaust manifold ;) but that's something else.

Well chaps thanks for the replies, thought I'd give you an update so far.

1) Removed the metal pipe from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve, and blocked it off.

2) Whilst I had the EGR valve off, checked to see if was open or closed, found it to be closed, did open when I sucked on the vac pipe to the diaphragm.

3) The plastic assembly located between the airpipe from the airfilter and inlet manifold has as I said before has a butterfly valve which is worked by a series of smaller diaphragms which look like they take a vaccum from the main EGR vac pipe, these also take a 3 wire feed from the main engine wiring loom as Red, Yellow and pink.

With the engine cold and Not running this butterfly is open, but when the engine is running it closes and opens when the main thottle gets approx 1/4 open, and closes again when throttle closed, which leads me to think it is working.

This butterfly has all the appearances/ characteristics of an old style choke flap, which pulls open when full throttle applied.

4) The cable from the coolant pipe which operates the fuel pump was slack when cold, this was adjusted so that it operated the idle speed advance when starting from cold so that when it started it ticked over at 1000 RPM, and when warm it had slowed to approx 900 RPM.

And when all this done, took it for run up the road from cold with the result of NO DIFFERENCE

Looking at the linked posted thread it would seem that the van driver is having similar problems to myself but I dont have the smoking issues.

It will be intresting to see what if anything he can suggest.

As regards the CAT blocked, as I said it runs OK when warm, which I wouldnt expect if the exhaust/CATwas blocked.

As before any ideas and thoughts gratefully recieved.

Could still be the cat, disconnect the downpipe from the manifold and try it then. (it will be a bit noisy!!)

Skertonman,

I've posted a reply in this thread here with may be of interest...

It concerns the timing setting of the pump under ECU control...
