C5 hdi - revs dropping...

Unread post by hdi_man »

hi all,

got my car back from dealer after suspension issue was sorted.

now in 3rd and 4th gear the revs are dropping when accelerating, its strange, revving freely then you can hear it dip and then continue.

any ideas ? MAF sensor perhaps ? :?:

Unless the car has an auto gearbox, surely the revs can't alter without the road speed also altering.

Slipping clutch?
My first few cars (the kind that cost £100-£200), in the higher gears when accelerating the revs would climb faster than usual for the gear, then drop down. I lived with them till they dies of something else.

I don't know much about cars but maybe oil has got into the clutch when the suspension was fixed? Or maybe its just on its way out.

It wouldn't be the clutch as it would slip and the revs would rise.

This may be something that the ECU is doing wherebye it's overriding your accelerator pedal and reducing power. The only time this normally happens for me is when I'm driving on snow or ice.

Does your car have ESP/ASR? Try disabling it if it has.

BTW, I'm assuming that the car physically slows down when the revs drop and it's not like accelerating with an auto box during the change up in gear.

yes the revs drop and there is a momentarily drop in power. the engine sounds wierd and not smooth sounding obviously when this happens.

I will try ESP off and see what happens

Could it be the engine slipping into limp mode?

I used to drive a lot of Vauxhalls and if it threw up the Engine Management Light, it'd stop revving at 4,400 RPM. It wasn't as smooth as the engine's 6,500 RPM limit, it was quite noticable, it'd throw it down to 3800 and then allow it to accelerate again. Apart from that though, there was no noticable lack in power, only that you were limited.
