Hi Guys
Sorry if this is a stupid question but
My son has a Mk1 Megane 1.9 DTi 1998
When he first turns the ignition on the trip indicator displays a row of zeros on the first row and Oil on the second row.
Is this the service indicator, if its not what is it, if it is how do I re-set it.
Also I was told that holding the end of the wiper stalk down when the igniton is turned on will display fault codes etc, is that correct as the one on his car does nothing.
Thanks for any help
Paul
MK1 Megane and service light or is it something else?

Have you serviced it yourself?
If so did you use the Renault recommended oil?
It has been seen that some types of oil will register incorrectly on the electronic dipstick. Otherwise it is likely to be either a dud sensor or a poor sensor connection, worth checking the connections in the first instance as it is the cheapest and simplest option.

He has only just got the car so we dont know the service history, although I am doing a full service at the weekend. Where is the sensor for the electronic dipstick, as there is nothing on or around the dipstick or engine block where the dipstick goes.
Mind you I have also been told that the row of zero's is correct as all it is saying is that there is enough oil and as the oil level drops the number of zeros drop. confused or what.
Thanks
Paul

Haven't the faintest idea Paul, don't know where my own is (never looked, as long as it works)Paul-H wrote:He has only just got the car so we dont know the service history, although I am doing a full service at the weekend. Could well be. I'm sure mine is like that but would have to check to confirm. I've left my phone in my car so will pop out and check in a while.Mind you I have also been told that the row of zero's is correct as all it is saying is that there is enough oil and as the oil level drops the number of zeros drop. confused or what.
I only serviced mine on Saturday - you'd think I would remember that long wouldn't you.
I rarely look at it though as it tends to hide behind the steering wheel.
ETA:
Just realised I have the handbook here.
A full line of 'o' s indicates oil at max level.
A full line of '-'s indicates minimum level
A shortage of oil will flas the '-' indicators orange.
Flashing of the '-' bars plus the 'min' sign indicates a gauge malfunction.
So presuming your instruments work the same way you appear to be fine.
I'd ask my son, he has one too but he's buzzed off to America for a while.
