Xantia 2.1 TD Temperature

Hey all,
What temperature should my 2.1 TD sit at? because usually on other cars, i noticed that the temp needle sits in the middle, which is usually 90, but on this car, the middle is 80.
...and, at what temperature should the fan switch on?

80 Sounds about right. If I remember correctly 80 is the middle on most, which is where it should be sitting anyway.

Typically the fan comes on at 90 (slow speed) and higher speed at about 95.

Yep, thats bang-on. Middle is 80 on S1 Xantias but on S2 Xantias it's 90 in the middle

You don't want to be changing thermostats on 2.1s unless you REALLY have to....

80 sounds about right for an XUD, but HDis run at 90.

Richard, I agree but compared to what Isa has just done, it's about teh same complexity

On the 2.1TD the thermostat mounted on the side of the waterpump housing low down at the back of the engine. It's jut a bit of a 'mare...

ok... this one sits under the middle, just drove about 200miles up north, and the temperature was like between 60-70ish all the way..didnt get above that...
now,,driving around the city, yesterday, stop start driving around for around 3hours, probably about 30 miles in the city, it was over 80, more towards between 80-90ish...
i didnt see any of the fans switch on, but then again, am not sure it quite got to 90...?
now here's the bit that worries me, when i got out i could see a bit of smoke coming out from the front end, near the fog lights...
it has enough water and anti-freeze..not sure what it is..?

In my time of owning a 2.1TD Isa, the temperatures you describle were entirely what i used to see. In fact the odd thingw as that in traffic (City driving) the temperature would creep to 90 and hold there but it was always just below the fan cut-in point.

So, it will be unusual for the fans to cut in but they certainly should. get the engine really hot after a good run and leave it idling and eventually (and you may have to wait some time) the fans should cut in when the gauge is reading just a tad over 90.

It's a good idea to confirm they do.

A quick and dirty test of the basic operation of the fans can be made by disconnecting the brown BITRON sensor on the "thermostat" housing with the ignition on; this will cause the fans to run at top speed.

Alternatively, switch on the aircon. The fans should run at half speed as soon as the aircon is switched on.

No idea what the smoke is. It could be steam from a small pin-hole leak in the radiator...

In the 15 years I have been running XMs the gauge has normally been at about the middle, I have had a couple recently have had faulty thermostats but they have unusually not failed completely but start to open early, you then get a reading of about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up. As long as its below half way rather than above it, but not cold - I wouldn't worry.

Citroen stats seem to go baggy at around 100k / 10 years - all my Xantias have done this - running temp drops from bang on the middle to about 70 ish - I replaced the stat in my HDi when I had the coolant drained a couple of months ago because of this, and temp is now back to just a smidge under 90 -actually this weather on the HDi you can see the stat working, runs at 90 if not working hard, then come up a hill or give it some beans and drops a bit as the stat opens up, then goes back up as the engine cools again.

My Hdi takes about a week to get to normal temperature in cold weather, but it has an auxilliary heater so I don't mind

just been looking on ebay, and seen the two thermostats below; which one is suited for my R-reg car? as the 95-96 one listed has a different temp to the 96-00 one in the listing....

I would be inclined to got for the hotter one but it doesn't really make a lot of difference as most diesels are inclined to run below thermostat opening temperature in very cold weather, unless you drive them very hard.
