xantia horn not working

Post by wornelly »

Hi my Xantia's horn is not working nor is the remote part of the central locking, there is also a clicking noise coming from the indicator relay every now and then, so I am wondering if the dead locking alarm is faulty or is this just thinking out loud lol, any help is appreciated, thanks :D

Might be separate faults.

First examine fuses (including engine bay)

What year is this car ?

The indicator clicking is probably the switch itself breaking up which can cause the relay to click a bit. If possible try a new stalk. Sometimes you can wiggle it a fraction of a mm and get the relay buzzing (do not leave it like this!) that confirms the switch is failing. Usually more common on a 306 despite similar switches on most PSA models.

Horn: Assuming its not the indicator switch effecting it, locate (not sure where it is on these) and unplug it. Attach test light and check that earth and feed are present. It might be a switched earth in which case a +12v supply will be present all the time, the switch in this case will be the earth. In any case have a look and see what's going on.

Not sure on remote locking, assume battery in plip/key good ? , have you tried recoding the remote locking ?
Andy.

Horns are up under the N/S end of the bumper.
I replaced the ones on Cassy with airhorns, much more effective, especially on motorways.

I did the same - easy enough job, used the existing wiring as the switch with a relay wired in to draw power direct from battery, inline fuse holder for peace of mind - took about an hour all in. Great for peace of mind when driving in urban areas with peds more interested in what's on their phones than watching the traffic!

As for the Relay clicking, thats a Faulty Indicator Stalk, they wear out inside which causes this ticking problem

CAN end up electrically dangerous.. so Ive heard..

There was a write up for repairing them useing resin, but replacment is quicker...

Yes, on SERIES 1 Cars, because the cowling wont come off with the wheel in the way..

SERIES 2 cars, the cowling comes off with the steering still in place... however, off the top of my head with the steering at 45 deg I cannot remember if this exposes the two T10 screws holding the stalk in place.

Either car: The indicator stalk is held in by TWO T10 Torx head screws...

Xantia II series:

As citroenxm told, "The indicator stalk is held in by TWO T10 Torx head screws... "

Xac, are the air horns good, Is it a single or twin tone?
I have installed twin horns some years ago but now due to the harsh winter
conditions, one of the twins has lost it's sound quality :(
Mine look exactly like the ones shown in Halfords --> Car Horns
May be I should try next the air horns

By the way... Series 1 Horn is ON the Stalk... Series 2 are on the Steering wheel Air Bag....

So thinking about it - it must be a Series 1 car... :?

That's true, I have taken the above pic. during wiper stalk change.

In mine the horn electric contacts were corroded badly and I guess the horn itself was also suffering of corrosion.

For the airhorns, I recommend Stebel Nautilus - I got mine from Ebay. Very compact but easily loud enough to scare the unwary. I installed mine in about an hour, including removal of wheel arch liner, running cables and wiring in with the supplied relay. Also fitted an inline fuse in a waterproof holder, just for that extra bit of protection. Well worth the couple of quid.

I did a search on youtube once for "train horn" - some of the results are most amusing, but you have to wonder whether the resultant hearing loss from their horns is worth it.

Ta very much for the Stebel hint; they were fitted to some Peugeots but I had no idea they are now so cheap aftermarket. This has actually resolved a concern I had with keeping one car original as possible.
