Citroen ZX Rear Wheel Bearings

Post by geb042 »

I'm having the rear brakes & drums replaced on my ZX 1.9D hatchback (Bendix).

The drums that I've bought came without wheel bearings fitted into them (that's why they were cheap!).

The question I'ma sking myself now is, should I refit the wheel bearings or is this a false economy? Should I really fit new ones?

If they are nice an greasy they are probably fine, unless you have had any noise from them I would refit them. Make sure you grease them well on reassembly.

I doubt you will get the old bearings out of the old drums without wrecking them (they are double row ball Peter, not taper roller!) so new ones probably required. TBH for the cost of the bearings, it's probably not worth buggering about trying to get the old ones out without wrecking them - and you can get the new ones pressed in ahead of time to minimise car downtime.

Last time I got involved with ZX Rear drums I ended up with new drums, bearings, linings, adjusters, wheel cylinders, and pipes  I just about managed to recover the thread on the NS stub axle that some gorilla had mashed before me (and he was also the reason that the wheel cylinder failed, and had wrecked the drum.... )

I hate working on drum brakes nearly as much as I dislike working on exhausts!

Cheers chaps - looks like I'll need to shell out for some bearings!

That said, at least the bearings won't be giving me any hassle in the future.
