Wiper problem, help needed

Post by RoyChristie »

Got a Xantia S1 1.8 16v 1998
when I picked it up the wipers did not park automatically,
the washers are ok,
nothing happened in the first up position
the lowest position made it sweep but still not auto-park
The second up position made the wipers sweep normally
top position made the wipers go faster

I've had the car a month, just got a new MOT

Today, I hit a bump and heard a click and the wipers started to sweep -
they will not turn off, except with the ignition off
The only difference the wiper stalk makes is that the top position still makes the arms sweep faster, in all other positions the wipers continue to sweep.
I managed to wash the screen a few times on the half mile home
but I cannot drive it like this

Has anyone got
1, any clue?, the diagrams in Haynes are a bit mad
2, photos of the relay/s and timer units and a clue where they are located?

I would really appreciate any advice.
Still have my V6 intact, shh

Thanks in advance,
Roy

id say its the wiper motor, there could be grease or dirt on the electrics inside the motor, I'm not familiar with a xantia wiper motor but it's a problem I've fixed on a few cars by cleaning and rubbing the contacts with a bit of sand paper, particularly puntos

slight electrical nightmare

Post by RoyChristie »

no rain sensor

I could haul the motor out and clean it
sounds more of a timer relay problem to me but what do I know?

I would be interested to find out which relay is which anyway-
since my front electric windows have no supply,
rear windows are windup on handles
and my cigar lighter has no supply
When I get that lot sorted, everything works, inc aircon...
is there a pic anywhere in the forum identifying relays in location?

the timer circuit for intermittent wipers is built into the motor, also some wiper motor assemblies have a wheel with a circuit on it which is for the park function on the wipers

Thats the first time Ive heard the wipers having the timer built in!!

It will be a relay in the area of the fuse box is my guess..

1998?? Series 1 Xantia?? Must have been ordered late then, as the Series 1 ended in 1997...

This is interesting, as Ive also got this problem on a Series 2 Xantia, they wont sweep when the Washers are used.. but work normally with every other setting....

Beleve it or not, the Haynes Key in the Book DOES cover All these curcuits, so refer to the book for the item numbers.

so dirt or faulty connections in the motor will include the timer relay and most likely the parking sensor.
time to get dirty
and coold
thanks

i could be wrong about the xantia motor but i have worked on a lot of cars that have this system,

a relay is a switch that switches on a large supply of current when it receives a smaller input on another pin, it could be stuck on but it won't be timing anything

Thanks for that, I will remain warm for another half hour and cogitate..
The pics from Jim's site are excellent,
however that is a S2 with rain sensors, I think.
the parts are different in mine, which appears less complex..
still doesn't work though
Is there a similar schematic for the S1 anywhere?

The car is S1,
my apols, 1997 it is 3/10/97 first reg
green, aircon, 1800 16v, electric front, windup rear, no ABS

Ah.. right, im sure Jim has the diagrams for S1 cars too, but I dont think theres much difference in relay layouts, the only difference is the Auto wipers, which are a cuircuit of there own!

IIRC, the only 'switching' that the motor does is in the parking (could be wrong)

Just looked under my dash, there are 2 mini relays that control my wipers - would post photo but cant work out how to on here!

If my memory serves me correctly the park function is operated mechanicaly by a contact and track on the end of the wiper motor which is perminantly live via a relay with ignition on, the motor is fed power to run when it is anywhere on the sweep other than in the park position so as soon as you turn the wiper off it is still fed power on a second track, as the wiper comes to the park postion the contact drops off the track and the motor stops. i would check the feed relay first if the wipers work fine in all other area's.

Intermittant timed wipe is controlled by the Stalk itself which is why you can upgrade to variable intermitant just by swapping the stalk, only MK1 cars though i think.
